Your problem may be as simple as a broken solder joint. See if you can remove the board enough to to check the solder joints where the loose part connects to the board. If you are not handy at soldering maybe a friend could assist you.

I tried resoldering all of the joints on the board, and nothing seemed to work. The wire holder at least doesn't wobble anymore. The only time I get a reaction is when plugging in the board. I got excited at first when I triggered it because I plugged it into the start knob with three credits (so when I plug it in without something blocking the light, it should start immediately), it worked. But unfortunately, that was no indicator of the thing actually working properly, as the only time it does anything it when it's being plugged in. So it doesn't look like it was the soldering. I think the sensor's just kaput.

I've attached a couple of pictures that I tried to take of the sensor. I've since removed the bracket (it was in the way when trying to solder).

Any thoughts on replacement parts that I can use for this thing? I'm planning to replace the part in the start knob and use that sensor for the coin chute. The more specific the better. I'm not exactly an electrical engineer, so if you know of the part at Radio Shack or something, a parts number would rock. I'm thinking at this point, I'll have to convert the machine to just take a button push instead of the knob, unless I can rig the knob to push a button, which is certainly possible.

thats probably a proprietary board .try this once plug it in and take a small wire and short the red and the yellow i mean just tap it like it were a momentary switch it should give you one credit . if it doesnt then do the white and yellow one should work .then you can wire a switch as i did till you get your replacement the problem is the black piece on that board it doesnt open when the token goes through .

Sorry about the lack of timely response. I just started a new project in the lab and I haven't had a whole lot of time to tinker. Plus I blew a fuse when I accidently shorted the wrong wires and just got it replaced tonight.

So I traded the board for the coin mech with the one for the starter knob (Identical boards). That seems to work. The black piece on the board is always open. It's just the light or whatever is used to sense something is in between the two parts that seems to be the problem. What kind of switch would you recommend? I've tried a momentary switch, but that didn't really seem to do much to help. A short of the wires (white and black) does start the machine, but only once. After this, it doesn't seem to work (shorting to start the reels spinning, that is). I don't know if I'm just not contacting the wires well enough or what, but after I've had the machine off for a while, then turn it on and try again, it works.

I tried using a similar mechanism for the coin chute, but it always errored, no matter how quickly I tapped the wires to each other. Any suggestions on getting subsequent start attempts to work? Do I need to try taking off the plug (would I just cut the wires, or is there a way to do this without rendering it useless), or can I just contact the wires via the plug? Thanks!

you really need to get a meter it sounds like your shorting the wrong wires and once you rest the machine its reseting the power . if you use a meter you'll find two wires are 24 volt and one is either 24 or 0 and when the switch is thrown it is the opposite which tells it to spin . you need to do the same by putting the pos or neg to the switch leg to make it what it wants and a meter is the only way to tell how do it .Your almost there ...

Hold up a minute, stop back at radioshack and buy or borrow an Infrared sensor. (a 6 inch strip of plastic with a tan piece on one end that "sees" infrared and makes it visible) test out the sensor. If not I have similar machines that I can test it with and possibly fix the unit or replace the sensor off of my parts shelf.

I had a different machine act this way and it was the start knob that was shorted. That could be your problem.

I know you all have been anxiously waiting to hear what's been going on with this machine

I took some time away from the machine after cutting some wires and not getting the results I thought I was going to get. I had pretty much given up.

Then, out of sheer boredom one evening, I sat down next to my good friend Reno and played with the wires again. By shorting White and Black, I indeed was able to get the reels spinning (recall that I replaced the coin mech board (which was not working) with the start knob board (which was the identical board and working just fine). However, every so often, White to Black would no longer start the reels. Red to Black is always bad, and has blown a few fuses. White to Red, however, seem to restore the ability of White to Black to start the reels. So I think I've solved it to the point that it will work, and eventually I'll replace the bare wires with some kind of button. Who knows. Maybe I'll even be able to get the start knob to do it. I even got my first triple-7 bonus, which was wonderful. Definitely loving the music. Thanks to everyone who gave their input. I think it's finally over
