Default Vintage Pachinko Parlor Experience in Gardena CA

Today (sunday) is the last day of the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute Carnival, they have 16 vintage pachinkos set up to play. (15 balls for $1.00) if anyone in the LA area would like to come down and play some vintage machines it's alot of fun.

All the monies collected go to support the JCI, there is food, bingo, games for the kids. Its a small carnival but fun Noon till 6pm today

The carnival is located on 162nd st between western and van ness

I'll be there most of the day as their "Mechanic"

    It all started innocently enough...
I was working the snow cone booth, and wandered over to look, I started talking to the guy (Joe) that was setting them up and he told me that last year they had alot of problems with the machines. I casually offered that they were easy enough to work on and it seems I offered my services.
But boy was it fun, the machines were full most of the day, and it wasn't adults. It was the kids, and not once or twice, they were coming back all day. 16 machines outdoors, makes quite a din.

If you have the time come on down. Introduce yourself, (I'll be wearing a brown hat)

Sorry for the late notice but I got home late last night and the internet was not working.

    Photos of the players
Behind the scenes at the parlor, local basketball teams showed up in groups of 3 or 5 to fill the ball supply trays for about 2 hours each
Good old cardboard boxes to make sure the balls didn't roll all over the place. (a few still ended up on the floor)
Stay tuned for the next set

In Closing, hope everyone enjoys the pictures, I had a great time over two days and was really surprised how many people played the machines, I would estimate that we had about 90% usage on the machines for the 16+ hours of the carnival. Most people bought 2-3 bags of balls some as many as 20 (1 or 2 at a time) and spent anywhere from 10-30 minutes playing with a more than a few playing for 2 hours or more. To correct my orginal post the balls were 30 for $1.00. We were the only game booth that was not offering prizes, all the other booths did and we were beating them hands down. What surprised me the most was the large number of kids wanting to play machines that had nothing to do with computers or video games, and they kept coming back for more.
We had several older Japanese ladies that wanted to know where to take the balls to get their cash. (obviously they've played before) one even waited until the cops moved along before asking. Next year I'll give advance notice so anyone that wants to make the trip can have a little fun

It's great to see how much interest there was for these beautiful machines,

and that they had the playability to keep people's attention, especially with todays computer / video game obsessed

    Super Pics

    thank you

Even in the large picture I can's see the date on the tax stickers but I would guess mid 70's
