If the USA tapped into those shale oil deposits, we would be the world's largest oil producer, the hell with Saudi Arabia.
But will it happen?
Probably not in our lifetime.

We're certainly en route to the inevitable, though headway is being made in alternative fuels, hybrids, etc. In fact, if anything good has come out of what's happened to gas prices, that would be it. At long last, major manufacturers of vehicles are competing in earnest, and the competition will be fierce in the near future. All good for consumer in the long run. In the meantime, countries should take advantage of their own resources rather than help some sheik in the middle east add another silver plated German sportscar to his already large collection.

OPEC has us by the short hairs only because we allow it. A massive decrease in oil sales brought about by tapping our own resources, and the new technology of fuel cells, etc., would bring them to their knees. Yes, China and India will still be major purchasers of crude oil, but the loss of the US, Europe, and many South American countries would devastate OPEC.

The sad part is that we are all caught in a big con game.

The oil companies are shouting "oil shortage" yet making record profits. Tell me this... If there is an oil shortage in the US; why are we still exporting oil to other parts of the world?

This is why... The oil companies make more money by selling oil on the open market. They invest maybe $10 or so a barrel, and sell it for $160+ a barrel. They will then buy oil on the open market at $160+ a barrel and pass the cost on to us. They don't care because they have already made their profit.

If the government was to prevent the exportation of US oil; the price would go down, and the shortage would be over. The oil companies won't be happy until the cost of gas in the US is the same as it is in Europe. They make more money on what is sold in Europe, and they want that profit margin here!
