I've seen some old guys around here wearing boxers and shorts.

but, the boxers are longer than their shorts

    Unhappy Re: Possible volume control?

Sorry for opening this thread. I saw so many threads for this, I was hoping that there was one simple solution. I see that that there is, depending on technical ability. I'm a noob, therefore confused.

Let me just ask one more question, and i will close the thread and never ask about volume control again. It's all new to me, and everyone has been very helpful so far. This is my last stumbling block, then I can actually play my pachinko machine... I was thinking this was my speed, technically... would this work for me? Never feel sorry for opening a thread. Everyone has a difference of opinion and that's what makes it all fun. Every once in a while you need to blow of steam. But in the end we are all friends & all love to play with the machines that we have gotten.

...and we were all new at one time My good friends here at PachiTalk installed volume controls for me when I didn't think I could handle it. But if you are still unsure of your capabilities, Luckydog's suggestion of a sock was not a joke. Good luck!

I wouldn't trust those tiny things not to burn up quickly. You're better off with one of these type:

I have always found one of the best ways to learn is to listen to people with different opinions. We have some very intelligent members here who bring different views for a solution. It is a win/win situation for me... And besides, we have had some legendary arguments on Pachitalk. Just search the threads, I am sure you will find them.

    Hi Mactek
Very interesting ... but Daverob knows what he is talking about for some reason they are not available anymore ???

Anyway I always using 5 K volumpots but recently I heard that 1 K pots are better and much easier to adjust ...Will test this out soon and keep you informed .

The lower the value the better. With 5k the adjustment is all at one end of the range, there's only a fraction of a turn between unbearably loud and nothing at all. 1k is better but I still find that most of the range is unused and they are still a bit fiddly to adjust.

When all the adjustment is at one end of the control, then all of the power dissipation is concentrated in one small section of the track, increasing the risk of them burning up.

I've also tried 100 and 200 ohm pots and they don't have quite enough range to turn the volume completely down to zero on most machines. Though the 200 ohm ones are just barely audible when turned to minimum volume so are probably the ideal value to use if you'll never want to set the controls to complete silence.

I personally use 500 ohm pots as I can source them for a sensible price and with a high enough power rating to be confident that they won't burn up, and they're also from a good quality manufacturer that gives sensible real world ratings on their data sheets (often backed up with temperature derating information) rather than one that just states the nominal best case power rating at room temperature.

Ditto to what daverob stated above. 500 ohms would be the best value, as it will give you more control than a 1K, and way more than a 5K. 1K at minimum volume will give you a 42dB volume reduction, while 500 ohms will give you a 36dB decrease. I run around -20dB on my machines on average (about 72 ohms) due to roommates, otherwise I'd use less. 200 ohms is about -28dB which would be a bit too quiet for me. Hope that helps...

    -3dB = 3.3 ohms
    -6dB = 7.96 ohms
    -9dB = 14.55 ohms
    -12dB = 23.9 ohms
    -15dB = 36.9 ohms
    -18dB = 55.6 ohms
    -20dB = 72 ohms
    -30dB = 245 ohms
    -40dB = 792 ohms
    -42dB = 1K ohms

    Smile Re: Possible volume control?

It's funny...I work in the cable industry so I deal with how signal people have to thier homes. It's comforting to know all the training I've had has come in handy adjusting the volume in my pachinko machine.
