I've thought about how to do it and it seems the best way would be to put down the new mylar before putting in the picture and punching holes through the mylar with nails while you can still see where the holes on the board are. Then when you have a picture in place behind the mylar you can use the holes in the mylar as a guide for putting the nails back in the right places.

Great input. I still want to find out more about how the pins are held into the board. I dont want to have to fabricate the backboard itself if I mess it up at least not unless I ABSOLUTELY have to. One bad pin drillout and its back to a new section of $80 a sheet plywood. I am hoping someone will read this post that may have had a success or even a disaster doing it and is willing to put out the information to the rest of us.

I can't say this is true for all machines but on two of mine (a 50s vintage and a 90s motorized shooter) I've been able to pull the nails straight out with padded pliers (I wrap the gripping teeth with electrical tape). I was cleaning or repairing spinners, which are held in by the same nails, but those nails may have been looser than usual if someone had removed them before.

I use a wiggle and twist method. I think the important thing is to try and make sure the wood will still hold the nails when you put them back in. Also I have a pachinko hammer that I use to tap them back into their holes (Pachinko Hammer - DICK GmbH Onlineshop) as well as to tune up nails positions without wiggling them.

Don't loose the nails unless you have a trashed machine you can cannibalize for nails, or can get nails from someone else (maybe here Parts or here http://www.pachinkoman.com)

I am a tool freak if you can excuse the reference I have a couple of Brad Hammers that I will set to the grinder but I was thinking of using a cut off nail set that has been beveled with my dremmel to fit the heads of the pins to re-insert them and using a drop of red Loc-Tite at the bottom of the hole to re-secure them my concern is how to shim the playing field once I have placed a new image I dont think it will fit the chassis properly without some trim router adjustments. and the ball lifters I built may need a bit more back clearance in the new cabinet.

Any nails I've removed have a slight twist to them at the point, kind of 'screw' into the wood.

Yeah, they look same as the ones I ordered from Japan,
with that little bit of twisty thread...

Must be what anchors them safely as the pins must be under a lot of stress from the sheer force
    of the balls at times...

You can see the form of the nails on the cells with the big screens. The nails are locked in the plastic in front of the LCD and they all have that same twist.

It's a royal pain to get those nails out without damaging them. You have to pull outward and twist at the same time. If I had to pull a bunch I would drill a slot on a pair of plyers and coat them with rubber.

Ok My summer projects are either Postponed or off for the time being. Anyone interested in giving any one of my 3 babies a good home would be welcome to them as long as visiting rights are available. the only one I know WAS in perfect working order is the arepachi, that and the Nishijin have full surround backing cases. the magic carpet has a normal open back.

Easy there Big boy... Eddie already has dibs. My playfield has zero water damage. it is dirty but in great shape. and he will have 2 identical. I also want to ask eddie a question. If you look at the yellow module (Blue label marked A) Mine has a red module marked C behind it. I was wondering what his has or if he has a B.

Loc-Tite is great but you could reseat the pins with a 2 part plumbers epoxy. You'll have about 5 - 10 mins working time. Mix the putty and using a putty knife, fill the holes. Re-insert the nails. It sands up wonderfully. I'm just shy of using loc-tite.
