Default My first Jankyu and its restoration

Well I have a Jankyu Machine almost.
It arrived from Japan on Sat morn and I had a chance to do the first of the restoration process yesterday.

I knew that the machine was to be in very bad shape as this info was given by the seller but I took the chance.

I was also told that it DOES NOT work but maybe I can get it up and running.

Its not only missing the glass its missing the Door that holds the glass!! That was not told to me!

The Machine is very very dirty. You would think that it was sitting in a coal mine for 20 years. The Electronics
are saturated with soot and tar as is everything else.

I dont know how many balls it uses or even how to play it.

For now Im just cleaning it and repairing anything that I can repair before I even attempt to fire it up.

I think that all of the machines I have worked on up to this point have prepared me for the work that it will take to restore this machine.

There is lots to do for now I have completed the rear of the machine with the exception that I need to fabricate a post/connector for the coin slide to the Coin Payout solenoid as it is missing.

I will begin work on the back of front of the machine tomorrow. There are tons of parts and electronics to deal with. It is a very complex machine with many switches and electronic components. More so than any prior machine that I have restored.

I took pics of before and after of the rear of the machine and of the mess it makes of my apt LOL

Again everything was taken apart and cleaned even the wire harnesses, Control boards , switches , wire harness mounts etc
I tried my best to clean the Ribbon wire but the tar wouldn't come completely off.

The pics of the face of the machine are very deceiving as the machine is a wreck very very dirty but you cant tell from the photos.

The pic of the cell close up gives you some idea of the crud.

I will use the next few post for the pics as there are a bunch.

    Hope you find this interesting.

    Final pics for now.

I didnt post the pics in any order so you will have to jog between them to see before and after the cleaning.

The rear components are now finished and looking good !!!

The Final pic is what Im up against tomorrow.

Default Re: My first Jankyu and its restoration

Here is an update in the restoration.

14 more hours later and Im not even close to finishing. It turned out that I had to remove parts form the face of the machine in order to work on parts in the back of the machine. I figured that while I was removing the pieces I would clean them and the area they were removed from as I went along.

I would have rather worked only on the back as there is so much involved.

Here are photos I took with some blurbs for them.

1 The Button panel removed revealing the PC board containing the actual buttons and the LCD Board just above it. The Ball access door is also removed.

2 The 2 PC boards lowered revealing the dirt behind. There is a really complicated way that these boards are connected to the Button panel using a metal frame work (Which had to be polished).
I couldn’t remove the ribbon harness from the LCD board nor the connector for the button board which made the removal of them from the button panel very hard as there was no room to work and very little play to get a screwdriver to the screws.
It was very hard not ripping out the wires from the boards . I don’t know how I managed it.
I zip tied the PC boards out of the way to the pins on the cell to avoid straining the harness wires supporting the weight of the boards.
This gave me room to work on the machine without interference from the PC boards.

3 The interface buttons in the panel. They are composed of 3 parts each! What a drag to clean especially the tiny springs! Loose one tiny spring and a button is useless.

4 The buttons before total disassembly and their bath. Try to spot the small springs on the bottom of the tub.

5 The ball access door removed note the dirt. If only all Parlors were smoke free it would make our job of cleaning these machines 10 fold easier. The dirt comes off easily its the Tar that takes so long to remove.

6 Front of ball access door its composed of 6 pieces plus the speaker note the dirt.

7 Rear of Ball access door. Speaker wires were cut for removal. It turns out that after removing many parts from the rear of the door there was access to the speaker connector.
The wires were taped for speaker removal from the front prior to my cutting them probably the way the parlor techs removed the door in a quick manner.
I added quick connectors to the wires for future removal.

8 Ball shooter ramp with some dirt wiped away from the left of the cell.

9 Front of plastic ball ramp covering shooter hammer. Note dirt!

10 Plastic ramp removed and Shooter Hammer exposed note the grime!

11 and 12 The unsual ramp assembly before disassembly and cleaning note the soot like material. I posted this assembly as I have never seen one like it on Pachinko machines before.

13 The Pocket board removed from the rear of the door. It is not typical in its design as are the Arepachi pocket boards. The Arepachi pockets usually have a board with standard microswitches connected to it which attaches to a formed plastic multi channel pocket board 16 channels wide. This unit has individual pockets and micro switches mounted directly to it. Both the Pockets and microswitch units are composed of many pieces. These units were saturated with tar and grunge. In this pic the first Pocket has been removed and in the empty space below it is the microswitch unit. I cant tell you what it took to remove these pocket units and to separate them. I have no idea how much this machine must have cost to make in time and money as the design renders its assembly be done by hand and there are numerous parts which could have been designed much less complicated.

14 Close up of 1st removed pocket. Care in removal is essential as breaking one of these pocket or microswitch units would render the machine useless. The parts are old and covered with tar which holds them together like a glue. Cleaning them can cause them to become brittle if your not careful with what you use to clean them.

15 1 microswitch unit and 22 pocket units remaining to be removed! Talk about repetitive.

16 Pocket Units removed and ready for disassembly.

17 A Pocket Unit opened... note the gunk. I haven’t had the chance to disassemble the microswitch units and Im afraid to see what horrors are on them!

18 The pockets getting their bath. All of the screws and hardware are getting cleaned in a separate tub.

These photos depict just a tiny fraction of what was done so far. The amount of parts that have been removed cleaned and polished both metal and plastic is staggering not to mention lamp replacement and various small repairs.

There was no time to take pics as I went along so I just took pics of some of the more interesting things. Remember I clean every part with Qtips using windex after they get the Simple Green bath and then polish them with Brillianeze .
To be honest the bath really doesn’t get the tar off just some light dirt and it doesnt get into the corners and crevices to remove the black lines. Only individual part cleaning with Qtips does that so you can imagine what it took to clean all of the button parts and the pocket parts as there are hundreds of them and each gets the same attention to detail. Its not done until its clean!!! Then there are the standard big parts like the door plastics ,panels , switches, clear parts, harnesses, Pc Boards and their individual components they all have to go through the same treatment.
I work straight through at a good pace without taking breaks as I have OCD about things and have close to 24 total hours invested so far and have at lease that much to go. I wont be able to get back to the machine for a few days so its killing me that I cant continue.
I am also in the Process of hunting down a glass door or someone that can custom fabricate one for me.
I just hope after all is done that the machine will work LOL.

Next installment in a few days.
After this that Prewar machine will be a snap to restore!!!

To be honest I dont know?

I did however get 2 1/2 hours to work on the machine today and I took some more pics.

1 The Pockets all cleaned and ready to be assembled.

2 The inside of a cleaned Pocket. I couldn't remove the rust from the weight that was on the surrounding plastic edges.

3 All of the pockets cleaned and ready to be remounted. This weekend I will start the microswitch units UGH!

4 The Button panel with sparkling Buttons!

5 The Ball Access Door all nice and shiny again.

6 Both Door and panel reinstalled. The surrounding parts of the machine face ( The Sides and from the words Graphic Magicom down) haven't been worked on yet so they are still dirty.

I had 20 mins to work on the machine. I managed to take apart two of the pocket switches and its not pretty. The second one started to strip a screw head which can be a nightmare if this happens. I hope the rest dont have this trouble. How would I find replacement screws for these?

The Units are really dirty but not only that they are not MICROSWITCHES!

They are switches composed of 3 pieces within the case halves.

1 The Yellow Rocker Finger has a piece of metal attached which makes contact with...

2 the Odd electrical component which is embeded into the switch case. I never saw this before and I hope there is a way to test them. I will test for continuity across the components ends but that might not be enough not the accurate way to test them.

3 The unbelievably tiny spring that holds the rocker finger open. Its easy to see the spring in the photos but in real life they are almost invisible they are very very tiny and I dont want to lose any of them.

I posted pics of the unit for you to see how they are put together and the crud.

The last pic is of the back of the machine and the large Horizontal Gray area is where the pocket board came from.

You can see that the gray area is dirty as is the rest of the back. I did manage to clean the 3 piece clear Plastic Ball track and the red piece in its bottom center which is the Start pocket mouth for Start Pocket in the front of the cell.

Tomorrow I get to work on the machine for most of the day !!!

My guess is that those are magnets on the yellow rockers, and the switches are 'magnetic reeds'.

You might need a third or fourth hand, but check the continuity of that reed by moving the magnet closer to close the contacts, and further away to open it.

The switches shouldn't get dirty, since they are encased in glass... but you never know.

Yes, definitely magnetic reed switches. The glass tube prevents corruption of the switch itself, better than a micro switch.

As long as the glass is intact. It looks like there's plenty of seal at the ends.

Reed relais are still sold. So if one is broken, its quite easy to replace. They are not expensive either.

Wow great find thx. Hope I wont need to order any!

To be on the safe side I think I will clean the sides of switch unit with the reed relay by hand with windex and Qtips skipping the simple green water bath.

Ten Hours and 40 Mins later and I have a long way to go!!!

I just finished cleaning and assembling all of the switch units and mounted them and the pocket units to the pocket board. It turned out that the Reel Relays could be removed from the housing so it was an easy mater to clean the units.

The rear of the machine behind the pocket board was cleaned as well as the entire center rear of the machine and its components. The top and bottom of the rear of the machine has yet to be done.

There is still a ton of work to do and I still dont know if the machine will work!

    THe Photos

1 The switch unit showing all of its components.

2 The switch unit with components mounted.

3 The switch unit with components mounted different angle

4 The rear of the machine the top and bottom not started yet

5 The Finished rear center components of the machine.
