Hello I am new to the site and not really sure what the tread is as I am not super super computer savey But I do have a quesiton if anyone is able to lead me in the right directions at least! I have had a pachinko game for about 8 years now. I found it in a junk pile and asked if i could have it and they gave it to me for 10.00 big ol bucks...lol I have always wanted to resore it adn want to see it's history. Yet to no avail I have yet to get anything on it except that it is made by Okumura-Yuki and is very old... Alot of the parts are sun damaged but seem to be all there... I did look in the reaserch area and see nothing like it... Is there any hope? I want to play it bad and no have the time to work on it as I now work at home... I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited about it... Please help? Apryl

    WELCOME TO PachiTalk ! ! !

Can you post a few Pic's of the Machine? That would greatly help. We have a few people on board that restore the older Pachi's and I'm sure they will ring in soon.

Update... Too many hours since last post and too much done to list.

The machine has been almost completely restored. Its just a matter of installing the 2187 bulbs in the machine 37 in all. They are back ordered until Wed UGH! Im still looking for bases as I am missing 5.

I did manage to mount plexi in the area meant for the glass door. I couldn't use real glass for how it was done. I hope to find a Glass door one day as this glass can only be removed with screws. Its cool how the machine looks as if there is no glass in the pics.

Then its a matter of powering it up for the first time (With Vid)

The amount of parts that I had to work on this last go around was staggering. ( Remember these are parts done AFTER the pocket board and its components!) Every component no matter what its function was made of many components and each had to come apart and be individually cleaned. Nothing was simple and the amount of pieces each part was composed of was just nuts! Not to mention the dirt and tar and or rust that had to come off of each. It seems no part was spared of the residue as it snuck into and around and through everything.

The photos show the restored machine outside and in and also text which would be great if anyone can translate.

There is also a photo of the main upper light board that needs the bulbs. One question for electronics guys! Do you think these are wired such that if one bulb goes they all go?

I 'm sure they go on seperatly. You can see that every bulb has a separate wire on the PCB. All bulbs off/on only needs two, not a PCB full.

You deserve a heartfelt THANKS for the great information, progress reports and pictures. It's a masterful job.

However, I'm giving you a groan because I am very jealous as I don't have one.

Tell me where! I will get to it right away!
If its the spot on the left of the Red trim above the coin tray its a burn mark and the only way to repair it would be to sand it and fill it then paint it but I thought to leave it as a reminder of what the machine was like.

The tar on the 2 ribbon cables connected to the top of the back main board refused to come entirely off as it stained the cables after all of these years. The rest of the ribbon cables cleaned up very well.

    This is the latest update

Last Monday after all work on the machine was finished (with the exception of the installation of the new 2187 lamps) I got itchy to power it up.

    This is what happened.

I connected the machine to the 100v Transformer just as a precaution. The Transformer was connected to the 110v powerstrip.

I turned the power on and, POP, the transformer fuse blew (as it did with the 7 shock machine) The fuse in the transformer is only 3amp so I figured that it wasn't big enough to handle the machine.

The machine was purchased as NOT working so I was thinking that there could also be a major short somewhere and that the machine could in fact actually be dead.

With nothing to lose I plugged the power cord directly to the 110v power strip and hit the button... Lights!!! I had lights!!!

The top of the machine was all lit and so were the cell lights in the upper left designating low coin hopper and game initiated.

On the upper right of the cell is a window displaying 6 Mahjong tiles. The are back painted on plexi that was severely warped from melting as was the housing that it was mounted to due to, from my guess, improper bulb size.

I had to straighten the warped Plexi because the unit it was housed in had to be removed to access both cleaning and inspection of its parts.

Being warped it took a bit of coaxing to remove it without damage to it or its painted surface. I used a blow dryer to heat it and 2 heavy cubes of glass to flatten it.

This Piece of plexi sits in a light sensor within the housing.

There are 6, #2187 bulbs, one behind each of these tiles lighting them in a cool left to right sequence.

The VFD display showed nothing at all. Was this the reason the machine was not working?

I was real excited just having lights at this point.

I inserted a token and the balls were dispensed so that was a great sign ( At least I could play it somewhat) and the mech was working.

I had installed 18 balls to begin with as I didn't know how many were supposed to be used and the ball channel held that many.

I placed a ball in the V pocket to see what would happen. The 2 lights on the middle Left and Right of the cell began to flash and the the sequencing tile lights stopped on a tile keeping it lit.

I figured that by activating the bonus, whatever tile was lit at the time the ball entered the V pocket was used in some fashion, to help make a winning hand. Pretty cool.

After playing the 18 balls through I pressed the small buttons below the VFD display thinking they would somehow activate it.

Each time I pressed a button a ball would be dispensed to the shooter? This would happen up to six balls yet the VFD would not display anything.

If I shot 1 ball then pressed 2 buttons and shot those balls I could press 3 buttons and shoot those balls. This could be done in any order up to 6?

If however I pressed the buttons BEFORE the 18 balls were finished shooting nothing would happen. Were they bonus balls caused by certain pocket combos?

On the far left of the button row are 2 larger buttons.

The one on the far left when depressed would dispense only one ball at a time which had to be shot before you could depress it again, dispensing yet another one ball.
This could be repeated up to 6 balls.

However, if you depressed any of the smaller buttons first and then used the far left button in your sequence, once depressed, you could no longer use a small button until all of the balls dispensed were shot. Again all of this happened up to 6 more balls.

This was going to be a hard game to figure out.

There were no sounds at all coming from the speaker not even a hiss. Was it or the soundboard dead?

I thought I might as well just replace what old bulbs that I could while awaiting my Back ordered bulb order.

I had boxes of 2184 bulbs and decided to replace the bad and dirty bulbs LOL... with what I had.

I knew that the 84s were too small (as the machine used 87s) and would burn out quickly but I just wanted to see the entire top of the machine lit as well as all 6 of the MahJong tiles flash ( 2 bulbs were out).

After replacing all of the bulbs everything lit just beautifully and it looked great.

I thought I would play out some rounds to see if I could get a WIN and test the token payout mech as there was not a microswitch that I could depress to trigger the solenoid.

After about 5 games in, the lights went out! I figured they would burn out but so soon? I figured no big deal jsut replace them with the 87s when the came in.

I called it a night. With my thoughts to the dead VFD display.

The next day I was online and on the phone to VFD Repair and Mfgs.
I even wrote to Fuji seeing if they could help with the problem.

I Got a reply from a VFD MFG and this is what was determined

    Eddie,
It looks to me like a vaccum flourescent display. Behind it attached
to the board should be a power supply board. If the Vacuum display
part is bad, its not repairable. If the power suplly board is bad,
it possibly could be repaired. Price aprox $400.00 for the repair
and test out of the display. If not repairable at all, then no
charge, we eat our time. Payments would be credit card. Please
include a phone & fax number on your packing slip. The display can
be sent to the address below at our shop. Turn around is normally
2-3 weeks after we fax over a hard quote for you to approve. I have
been having some trouble with my e-mail program, please reply to this
email and let me know if you received more than one copy of this to
you. I received 4 of your emails, all the same.

After many talks with the guy he seemed really honest and knowledgeable and not wanting to cheat me.

It was time to send the VFD , mainboard, transformer and wire harnesses Packing UGH!! I just got it together now it has to come apart again and I have to risk shipping damage.

I was this far into the machine so I thought I might as well see it through.

While pulling the wire harness( which also had to be sent) I noticed that the Large harness plug connector to the machine transformer was not fully seated!!!

I pushed it in untill I heard the locking snap.

I thought what the hell let me put back the components I had already removed and power up the machine again.

I hit the switch and there was a Hiss coming from the speaker!!!

At this time I was on the floor with the machine, The machine was open and I was sitting facing its internals.

I looked around to the front face of the machine to look at the VFD and ... IT WAS WORKING!!!

There was this cool little display of a Frog, like the King Pulsar Frog, Scrolling from the right of the display to the left then stopping and each time turning into a Mahjong tile!
Then came some Japanese text and other symbols along with the words GRAPHIC JUNKYU. How cool.

I inserted a token and was greeted by music and with each ball shot and pocketed the Tile depicted on its pocket would be displayed in the VFD.

After 14 balls were shot the display would no longer produce a tile and with only 14 pockets I figured that there should only be 14 balls and not 18 in the machine. I removed 4 balls.

So what was the deal with the buttons?

On the far right of the display after all of the tiles are shown there is a number 10

When you depress a small button the tile above it is discarded and you are given another ball. The number 10 deducts the ball from the count. So you get 10 tiles to discard and that many balls to get the new tiles. Cool

Below a certain tile is a horizontal underline which I believe is the machines recommendation as to which tile to discard.

You can discard up to 10 cards at a time. I was only getting 6 balls pressing the buttons earlier as I had shot 4 extra balls each time when there was 18 in the machine!

It was all making sense as you are given 14 balls to start the game then 10 more balls to discard tiles for a total of 24 balls for game play!!!

The button on the far left simply chose the computers choice of tile to discard. I guess it made it easier for players not knowing how or not wanting to have to choose a tile.

After the final 10 discard balls were shot the frog would bow his head and the game was over.

After many times playing I managed to get a good hand and with each correct choice of discards the machine would TALK saying good move. (Even if the discard was not the machines recommended move!) I managed to get a 1 in the upper center display and at games end the token solenoid activated paying out nothing as I had no tokens inside.
I taped the hopper microswitch closed.

I only have 5 tokens for the machine!

    Now the weepy part.

On Wednesday the 2187 bulbs arrived. I installed them and still the lights are OUT.
Power to the top lights comes from a ribbon cable connected to the mainboard the funny thing is that the Token count LED is lit.

The 6 sequencing tiles also remain out and they get power through the button board which gets its power from the main board. I suppose not only the 6 tile lights but the upper top lights deal with the bonus and the chip controlling them has gone bad (Just my non electronics expertise guess) I hope this can be fixed or checked.

    Calling Fronzdan!!!

The upper left lights still work (Low Hopper/Game initiated) as well as the flashing bonus cell lights

I still do not know the function of 2 buttons.. and not knowing which Tile that is lit in the Bonus messes up the best choice for Tile discards.

Well thats the lowdown and the Machine, sans lights, is great to play yet difficult to win on. It also gives you lots of play time for the money.

I think there was an issue in the Japanese laws that the machines had to give you more playtime in the parlors and that was the real inspiration for the Mahjong machines.

Below are photos I sent out of the VFD board to the Repair places.
Note the BURN marks in the upper left and lower right corners.
I was told before the display powered up that this was probably not the issue as its normal for some VFDs to acquire these marks and that these displays have a life of about 10,000 hours.

Wow this was some ramble wait till you see the vid (On a separate post)

I didnt go into game detail in the vid as I have done here.

If anyone is willing to help me solve the problem of the Dead lamps please feel free to speak up.

OK Im stumped would anyone have ideas as to why I cant get the 2187 lamps to come on?

I pulled the main board again to check it over.

I went over the wire harness (Visually)

My tester probes cant get into the ribbon wire connector the holes are too small.

The LED in the top center is getting power (Of course from a different circuit)

Could a processor keep the lamps from coming on?

What other thing could casue the lights to suddenly go out and not come back on?

Did I blow something using the smaller 2184 bulbs? There is no blown fuse to the lamps!

I took some quick pics that are really bad of the main board. The ribbon connector to the lamps connect to the larger blue connector in the center top of the board.
Maybe someone can see what might control the lamps

Does anyone know of a Co. that can reproduce the ribbon wires?
I think it would be good to have all new ribbon wires, there are only 3.

Would anyone know of a Co that could copy the rest of the Harness?

Ok this is sad but... PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP???
