Default Sound Modifications on Indiana Jones Pachinko

I would like to add a sound control modification to my Indiana Jones Pachinko. I've read posts on kits though have no idea which one to go with. Curious on what has actually worked in the field and which company's kits to go with? Are they that hard to solder in? Where would I do it on my IJ Pachinko (everything is incased in plastic hard shell cases)? The one I'm leaning towards is at http://www.pachislo.com/pachislo/par...il/volume.html

to be honist a 1K variable resistor and a little cable with a soldering iron is all you needs will see if i can find pics for you if you open the door / glass on your indy and look at the right hand speaker there is a caverty just the right size next to it all you do is cut the red wire to each speaker extend it to get to that cavert y from the left one and solder in the resistor

TRW Carbon Comp Resistors 1W 68 ohm 5%

I started last year to use a resistor on each speaker, that way they still use the factory volume control.

TRW Carbon Comp Resistors 1W 68 ohm 5%

Some machines were burning out the adjustable pots. I was losing my azz on sending out replacement ones and on the phone walking them thru replacement.

1W 68 ohm 5% is the answer... hmmmmmm? Would I pick this up at Frys or Radio Shack? Would one handle both speakers or do I need to buy two and tweek/set them exactly the same?

BTW thanks for all the info, this is really helping me

LOL, how do I open the casing to get to the speaker. I was given a key though it only looks like it swings open the whole Pachinko from it's frame.

Can't you tell this is my first machine already.

the one arby is discribing is a fixed risistor you probably get from radio shack and buy 2 install one in each speaker line

I much prefer the L-Pad for a handful of reasons noted in another post, however I did receive one machine with a 5W 51-ohm resistor on each speaker, and have not converted it yet. I'd be worried a good fever round would burn up that 1W resistor, as these machines deliver what, 13W IIRC? The 5W is still plenty small enough to fit inside the door too...

Is JohnD0406 saying there's a chance that a 1W resistor(s) might burn out? Should I go for something higher, more durable (excuse me for my ignorance, not sure what the right terminology is for this kind of part).

I opened up the Pachinko using the key that came with it though still have no idea how to get behind the glass/plexiglass screen. I can tell that certain front component have hinges though just can't find away to swing them open.

Turn the key to the right to open the whole machine. To the left to open the glass door.

I use 50-ohm 10 watt ceramic resistors from Radio Shack. They're overkill, but I know they won't burn up. They don't even get warm.

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... it took some finagling but I got it open. There's loads of wires but I think I found were both speakers clip in.

Does a 50-ohm 10 watt ceramic resistor(s) come with an adjustable control for volume?

No, its a fixed value. Your volume control will be the factory switch.

make sure your pachiniko volume control is set on low before turning it back on after adding resistors, l-pads or other volume controls..

Even though the amplifier chip is capable of higher ouput, the speakers in the Lumina frame are rated at 5W each so the amplifier will be limited to that ouput. There's no real need to use any resistors with higher power ratings than this. However it is possible to use a lot lower power resistors than this, as when you add a resistor inline with the speaker the amount of power being fed to the speaker is reduced.

With Arby's choice of 68 ohm resistors, the total resistance is increased by almost a factor of 10, so the amplifier can't push as much current through the higher resistance and the total power shared between the resistor and the speaker is decreased by a factor of 10 (to approximately 0.5W). Even though the resistor takes most of this power it could still be rated at 0.5W and be perfectly OK.

A higher power resistor is a better choice though, as a 0.5W resistor will get very hot when dissipating 0.5W of power (usually around 75-100 degrees celcius), so it is a good idea to use a higher rated one (ie a 1W resistor will only get half as hot as a 0.5W resistor). A 10W one will only increase in temperature by a few degrees, so is probably a bit of an overkill in this situation

Personally I like the idea of using a small cheap variable resistor, along with a fixed resistor. The fixed resistor will reduce the maximum volume to levels where ear defenders are not required (but can still be pretty loud!), and will also prevent the small variable resistor from getting overloaded and burning up.

One of these days I'll do the calculations and work out the ideal values for these resistors. But today has been a long day, and I've never been that good at simultaneous equations when I'm fully awake, so there's very little chance of success when it's almost bedtime.

I'd agree with JohnD and Frank here... I'm afraid that a 1W resistor would get pretty hot. Your best bet is going with a 5 to 10 watt rating.
The reason the small variable resistors burn up in the first place is because they aren't beefy enough to handle the power dissipation in the first place.

    For your convenience:

Here's the 50 ohm 10 watt resistor at Radio Shack

    And here's a 100 ohm 10 watt resistor.

Before you ask which is 'better'... just buy them both... it's only four bucks.
Try the 50 ohm resistors first... and if that's still too loud for you, use the 100's.
