    Default MAME

Any MAME fans out there? I think it would be a natural addition to someones gameroom that already includes pachinko and pachislo.

Don't know what MAME is? MAME is the 'Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator', an open source application that lets you run the games of old including Pac Man, Dig Dug, Joust, Burger Time, Spy Hunter, and more (currently supports over 2966 games!).

I'm looking to build a MAME cabinet for my gameroom. It'll run off a modified XBox using an X-Arcade two person joystick.

You can run MAME games off your PC as well. There are versions available for Windows, OS X, and Linux.

A friend and I used to just go in together and buy the cd's for just the cost of cd blanks and shipping from that service that does it(why spend the hours of downloading- need time for Pachislos instead !). Now they put them on DVDs or cds. But Mame has advanced way further than my Pentium 550mhz machine can handle so it has been about a year since we did it as my friends system got outdated also. They are readly available from I think they are called the free rom collaboration(sp?) something organization etc.

Note, I don't believe ROMs are legal unless you own the actual game. Thats why they're more likely to be found on sites like suprnova.org .

The XBox is handy for running MAME, as it is a self contained computer, has a hard drive, network connection, and a TV out. However, the XBox must first be 'modded' to accept 3rd party software such as MAME.

I don't remember the details, but some time back I read something about a loop hole in the copyright law that did allow the non-commercial copying and distribution of ROMs for computer and arcade games, provided they were from games for which the hardware was no longer in production. If I get a chance, I'll try doing some searching to see if I can find the reference to that.

Here is a link that has a bunch of different designs that people have made.

    Mame designs

The one for 1 ups rotating control panel is really awesome.

I have one in my game room I built. Great for reliving the old days at the arcades.

Nope I disagree :!: Look all the additional stuff you get just on the mame dvds. You can't find all the extras on torrent. Too much wasted time chasing it all down when it is all there already on dvds and fully updated and checked ! Here is the description of the 8dvds you get (unbelievable !) :

Now 8 DVD's, Full set with all extras, screenshots, artwork, CHD(Compressed Hard Drive) image files, gambling roms previously removed from mame, and all clrmamepro verified. Plus it also includes MisfitMame and PacMame rom sets. 29.50 US Dollars for Shipping Anywhere,

This is the set which includes EVERYTHING needed for the MAME emulator, including the huge .CHD files. Detailed setup instructions are on the first DVD to help you get started.
CHD files are compressed harddrive images used by more modern mame games and they are very very large(many over 1gig each) The full set includes all of these.

My friend will have his set in a couple of days. I intend to make a special trip to Tucson to witness the unveiling :!:

I will probably be getting a Dreamcast dvd or two filled up with Pachinko and Pachislo games I couldn't find anywhere else. This site has the biggest collection of emulated systems and game roms I have ever seen.

Great stuff...I wish I had stock in this company :!:

I think allmyroms is were I got my set as well. There were 8 DVDs. At around $30 for the set the price was VERY reasonable. It would have taken days, if not months, to find and download all that stuff yourself. It took an entire evening just to copy the games over to the hard drive - and I already had all the basic MAME software installed and running.

If want something in the way of emulation that even better than MAME - well, better if you're into things like pachislos and slot machines - check out this site:

    http://www.fruit-emu.com/index.php

These people emulate the "fruit machines" found in British pubs. They are like slot machines but feature play that is even more complex than pachislos. And, just like MAME, you're running the real code contained in the original machines ROM, so it behaves exactly like the real fruit machine.
