I think it's to allow the theft of your other spaceship, so you can have Two guns firing when you get it back.

In early versions of the game, you destroy everything but the right most blue 'bees' in the 1st and second rows, then keep your ship on the far left and avoid being destroyed for about 15 minutes. You have to be careful not to get hit by a shot that goes off the right and wraps around and gets you from the left. When the bees stop shooting completely (let them come down several times to confirm) destroy them. None of the enemies will fire for the rest of the game! I've gotten to at least 200 in rank levels.

i went and picked up the machine today, and while i was talking to the guy that i got it from he told me about the secret that compirate was talking about
so i guess it can be done on this machine

wasnt a bad deal all in all, 440 miles round trip and i got to visit with my sister
