Its a tradition in my family, then when I got married Gina's family always had them also. So I guess I thought it was a pretty common dish.
If you never had them before there incredible if made right. But its a lot of work. Thats why its only once a year.

My turkey and trimmings all came out great and were served buffet style piping hot

Menu
Turkey, stuffing, mashed pototes, gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes and hot dinner rolls

Desert
Pepperidge farms chocolate covered yellow cake

both my sons said they didn't expect to get such a good meal

and this year I will finally have some leftovers!!!

Besides eating??? Eating 'til it HURTS! Then comes the post-dinner coma, followed by round 2 about 6 hrs later.
We also have the tradition of watching "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" early in the day, and "A Christmas Story" as we eat our second plates of grub on TV trays at night.

Of course I've heard of them...wouldn't dream of using them...at least not on Thanksgiving!!! I only had 15 people here and I have enough dirty dishes for at least twice that

Don't you folks have something similar? Certainly there is a day used as the precursor of Christmas shopping where they feed you so much, the next day all you want to do is go walk it off and the best place for that is the malls.
