I just got a pinball machine too so... It's pretty much been decided that I have to move into a house and out of an apartment!

Right now I can at least PLAY the pachinkos... the pin is basically like having a drum kit above you though (for the person downstairs). I can only play it when nobody is down there

What did you get? You should be able to turn the volume down. Mine is new enough to have a full menu that I can run through to set all sorts of parameters, including sound. Granted, if you are a pinball player that bumps and jolts the machine, that will be the loudest as it is a direct physical transfer of sound through the floor.

Try rubber gasket material. I can't remember how much a foot it was, but it's like the stuff that parlors use in their troughs. Cuts down on the bounce also. Got mine at the local hardware store.

It's an Indiana Jones pin from Williams. She's a real beauty! The speaker sound isn't bad at all, but the solenoids are just so percussive and the energy transfers right into the floor. But this is just another reason to get out of an apartment and into a house.

My friend took a look at the Indy Pachinko and Indy Pinball and said "so what's next, a bullwhip on the wall?"

That IS an awesome, and rare, pinball machine. What you could try to do, beside move into a house, would be to put some sort of material under the feet that would disperse the sound. Problem is that any material like this would be rendered almost useless since the machine is SO heavy and would compress just about anything you would put under them. Sound isolation wouldn't work well either as you would have to create a sturdy, platform for the entire machine to sit on, and then use isolation materials and fill and ...
Yeah, just buy a house. It will be easier.

It's funny cause I've done a lot of googling for techniques to quiet both pachis and pins... every thread I've ever found on any site always ends with: "Get a house dude!"

The only other option is to mod up the inside of the pin with foams and carpet padding and stuff and that's just gonna generate tons of heat and potentially damage wiring, etc. etc. ...

I think I'll look for a place that needs some major fixing up so I can carve out exactly the kinda gameroom / casino / cafe area I've always wanted

Guess you havent checked my thread on quieting a Pachinko using mud flap rubber?

As well as using the material to quietly direct spent balls in the back to the bottom tray?

Using anything but solid rubber is asking for dust and debris trouble, Ie using Carpets, Cloth or cloth over any form of SPONGE rubber, or any Sponge rubber in general as it will degrade over time maybe not in a few days or even a few weeks depending on conditions but once it gets completely dry it will decompose.

This degradation will not occure with mudflap rubber as it was designed to withstand a much harsher environment then a Pachinko Cabinet.

I assume when you say mudflap, you mean something less than a semi truck mudflap? That's pretty thick stuff!

Mud flap as in Van.. its about 1/8" thick so it holds its shape well when fitted for whatever application its used for. Such as the deflector plate used to channel drain balls into the bottom tray.

The other rubber that I used for the cabinet floor and top cabinet hopper was van floor mat, rubber which is thinner about 1/16"

Of course the ideal solution is to be able to buy smooth sheets of these thickness of rubber instead from some mfg insted of having to shave off Co. Logos and carpet hoding pins etc.

I havent found a rubber mfg that will sell sheets of this type of smooth rubber.

The material couldnt be easier to work with. Cut to shape and insert or form it in a special shape then insert and screw in place. No glue no fuss no mess no degradation its clean and easy to cut best of all NO NOISE!!!

Like I said, rubber gasket material. About an 1/8 inch thick, glass smooth, about 12" wide x whatever length you need. Check a good auto-parts store or hardware store.

Hmmmm. Neoprene seems pretty durable, and the nature of the material makes it not dry out. Neoprene covered in fabric is even better. It is super robust, and the same stuff used in wet suits, and from my experience, they can take a beating on sharp rocks without getting damaged... Now, solid rubber should be better, and I would sure think that the rubber mud flaps would be SUPERB material. I am going the quality neoprene with cloth route that will be "glued" with 3M 77 adhesive. It will allow for removal in the future if need be, but will provide plenty of sticking power to hold in place.

I've decided to just contract Bose engineers to design a "Casino and Arcade Noise Canceling Control System" with discreet ceiling mounted speakers that output "anti-pachi" sounds that drastically reduce the annoying vibrations neighbors and others hear from your machines.

That might just work. After all, the inexpensive, mass-produced, low quality speakers in the pachis will be a good match for Bose's, inexpensive (for them), low quality speakers. Too bad Bose is massively overpriced for their low build/component quality and poor sound performance...

Of course, keep in mind that one of my other hobbies is home theater and audiophile level audio...

Those are cool looking, and I would say that they are better made than Bose, but still overpriced for the performance that you get. Their main goal is to difuse the sound coming out of direct radiating speakers. They do that, and look good doing it, but in doing so, they loose frequency response at certain levels, and don't have a "flat" freq. resp. graph that is desireable. Besides, you totally trash the way that the audio was designed to be played. I don't hook up my quad-polar surrounds as front speakers in my theater. You would loose a good amount of the directional aspect of movies. And 2 channel audio is designed to be precisely focused at a sweet spot.
Those speakers are better for playing background audio over larger areas, and not for home theater, descrete music listening, or even our pachinko sound eliminator project.
