I'm just hoping that people don't give up smoking, en masse...

...think of all the other taxes that will "have" to go up to cover the loss of duty.

When Delaware became a no smoking state RJ Reynolds decided to no longer sponsor the Winston Cup Nascar race at Dover Downs. It became the Nextel Cup. I guess I can't blame them.

As some know, I smoke a pipe. We also have rigid rules now on smoking in public establishments. Now I can honestly say I have never been comfortable with smoking the pipe in enclosed establishments because of the amount of smoke a pipe generates. However to curtail my pipe in outdoor events such as football games is totally ridiculous.

So in my defiance, I eat at home, drink at home, stay at home. I figure if they don't like my pipe they probably aren't going to like my money either. So I make sure my home is a fun place where you want to be often.

some beaches in Florida are no smoking or just in special areas.

no more flipping butts out the window because of dry weather and fires.

schools and churches have no smoking policies on any of their grounds.

at the courthouse the only smoking area is at a wishing well outside, maybe I should wish they slack off on the rules.

the VA hospital in St. Pete has only one smoking area near their entrance.

I stopped going to the mall when they banned smoking

the Hard Rock casino is about the only public building I can smoke in

Again, I'll be willing to bet that Kalifornia led the way for all the other states. I've seen legislation proposed that would ban smoking in cars, public streets, parks, etc. It won't be long before they will be banging down your front door because your second-hand smoke may be harming your goldfish or something...

Here, at least there is a concession though. If the bar is owner-operated, you may smoke in it. I don't consider myself a smoker, but I smoke a cigar or two a month, normally during fishing trips, poker games, choir practice. I understand the non-smoker's desire not to have to inhale smoke, but I really think it should be up to each establishment (at least with the pubs) to decide whether or not to allow smoking. I understand the restaurant ban, but think the anti-smoking crowd goes too far when they propose all outdoor areas, your car, and your home should be smoke-free.

When you go to a restaurant, order whatever gives you the most gas. Then ask them, which would you rather smell, my smoke or ...

Biggest hit is owner drivers like compirate my mate who falls in this catorgary has already had a smack on the rist and is waiting for his big fine when the road spits him out as we arnt allowed to smoke in company vehicles so he was enjoying his last cigarette befor he turned in for the night in the sleeping compartment of HIS own truck and there was a bang at the door so he looked out of teh window (sometimes its service station staff making sure you paid your parking fee) with a cigarette in his mouth and it was the local police and they find him £50 there and then and told him his employer would be geting teh big £1000 find wich is him self that is pathetic he owns teh truck he dosent have any one else drive it he dosent carry a passenger / shot gun driver and never has but still he cant smoke in there befor bed but has to risk getting knocked on the head for his load by smoking out side in teh early hours of the morning now tell me thats right !!! that he cat do what he likes in the cab that he has paid hundreds of thousends for and pays huge road and fule taxes on but still gets hit for the new ciggarett tax his words i tend t agree with "and i thought we forght to make this a free country" all i can say is im glad i no longer serve my "free country" as i realy would object to having my small pleasures in life taken away by the people i served

Oh but if you are sent to prison over here there is no smoking ban in teh prisons so if you want to smke in doors with your friends in public then just break teh law and get rewarded for it
My rice krispies told me to do it

Jeez. This thread should've carried a health warning.

"Those suffering from depression should not read this thread as it may tip you over the edge.

I just hope that the Government realises what the extended life expectancy of people who give up smoking will do to the pension bill in 20 years time. Although, they will be sitting on their butts (!!) with their index linked pensions paid for by the rest of us working till 70...

I wonder whether the two (alleged) terrorists found smoking outside Glasgow airport the other week will get a fine?

    Now where's my knife...

heres a good one last night a guy told me that hed gone to the doctors and told the doctor that hed got depretion on the grounds of not smoking in regarding..the loss of tax-duty on a packet of cigs ..may be 2-3 pounds but im thinking their playing crafty old soldier by finding people £50 pounds and above makes up of the lost tax-duty..or may be 1000,s upon 1000, of black market cigs comes in each day goverment lossing tax-duty..next best step is to ban em and fine the smoker its not fare...as any one knows pub-clubs ect attract smokers\non smokers its your choice where go and as been for years,so why now change it,years ago in pubs\old clubs had a dram shop, tap room, smoking lounge so whats the problem..just turn the fans and air con on and the smoke goes or just open a window...a the end of the day its up to you not what some crack pot goverment says..saying that we as a nation should have voted on it ...as we put into this country as well other people love their country and die for it we should treated as people not taxed to death...its great when people can talk about it wheather black or white rich or poor...like this site

the legal bans are based on the health of employees being exposed to second hand smoke.

I always found smoking and non-smoking areas silly.

its like the smoke will stop at the magical line separating the two.

I used to be a smoker, I also believe that anybody can do what ever the hell they want as long as it doesnt interfere with someone else.

the matter of smoking is a complicated one.

you cant just ban it, people are going to smoke no matter what they do. But it should be controlled in work place public buildings etc.

as far as restaurants, bars etc are concerned i believe that they should have the right to decide if they allow smoking in their establishment or not. and all the namby pamby anti smoking activists should live with it. if they dont want to be affected by the smoke there don't frequent that establishment.

As for the employees effected. we all have a choice where we work, we can always find somewhere else to work if our present workplace isn't what we want it to be.

as for fines for throwing cigarettes out of car windows etc.. I think they should be tripled. there is no reason we the super dominant life form on this planet cant keep our garbage in the car until we get out of it and be able to throw it in a garbage can etc.

there will never be an outright ban on cigarettes like others have said its too heavily taxed a product to be banned. smoking funds too many things...too many pockets are lined for smoking to go away...

law makers should focus on the real problems in our society and not worry about if mr. or mrs. joe blow wants to give themselves one of the countess problems that come with smoking.. Their choice let them make it.. BUT mr. & mrs. Blow have to live with their choice, what ever that may be... cant blame someone else for you choice...

You forgot the Kalifornia law about no smoking in your own apartment becaus e the smoke may go up and into the apartment above or through a screen from the padio below.

Or no smoking in you own car if someone else is in the car under 18 and soon to be anyone who wants to rat you out.

This is just a slipery slope down, they now want to have seperate areas in resturants (the old smoking areas) for families with children. Taxing and/or banning unhealthy foods etc.

Personally I always felt they should have kids and no kids sections in restaurants. I don't enjoy some mindless screaming child invading my ear space because it's parents are too cheap to pay for a sitter or not bright enough to teach it some basic manners. I'd much rather put up with someone else's smoke than their mind-numbing rug rats.
