Default 24 volt transformer hum and volume control

    Hello all,
I just bought my 3rd machine (Aladdin II Evolution) and it has a transformer in it before the power supply. My other 2 (Cyborg Soldier and Metal Slug) have no transformer and do not hum. The Aladdin however hums until I unplug it. Is that hum something all the 24v transformer machines do? Also the internal volume control on the Aladdin does very little. It has 4 speakers, can I put a seperate volume control on each speaker? Thanks for your help I love this group. Mike

I have only had one transformer hum. It was a 4 amp from CF Imports that came with my Julie pachinko. I swapped it out right away with a 5 amp. As far as the volume control. Yes attach a control to each speaker. Do a search for Volume control as there is tons of info on the subject.

What causes the hum in transformers...is it an incorrect or "too low" a voltage?

I have Sammy King Camel and it hummed loud, but i put in the inline volume controls (top link kind) and now it doesn't do it anymore!
Here's a cool link to the Sammy factory site for Aladdin Evolution!
In case you don't have it!

transformer hum can be due to many things but mostly just bad mounting . unscrew the transformer from the housing and get those rubber feet they sell at the dollar store for under VCR's and such place that under the transformer and put the screws through the transformer feet and through the rubber feet the hum should be gone . if the transformer is hot then you might want to consider changing it to a higher amp output model .(a warm transformer is normal but a burning hot one is not)

For the Sammy machine you will need 2 each of the 501 volume controls and 2 each of the 103 volume controls. The reason being there are two different sets of speakers that are different sizes. The top 2 speakers require the 103 controls, and the bottom set need the 501 controls.

Coronetgtx is selling the volume controls in the pachitalk auction. You get 6 for 15 dollars which is a very good price. He has two different styles I believe. The 501 and the 103. Just tell him which machine you have and he can split them up however you like. The link to his auction is below.

The transformer hum could be caused by a few things. The main problem that I have come across is on old transformers the metal in the middle of the transformers are stacked layers of thin iron laminations, then a adhesive is coated on the metal. Over time the adhesive starts to break down and since a transformer is just an electro magnet the iron laminations start to move hence the noise that you hear. The more power you draw the louder it will get. My advice is to replace the transformer and most if not all your humming will disappear.
