If you want something don't back off because you recognize someone else bidding on it. It's all fair game. Just try not to run up the price on someone else if you're not serious about buying the item.

I expect there is a poorly-written program somewhere that booksellers use to automatically set prices like this. All it really does is make the book slightly rarer and harder to find by effectively taking the stupidly priced copy out of circulation.
