    Default Sound Modification

Is anyone here familiar with MIDI? I am looking for the header info on a MIDI file. Most of the slots I have looked at have MIDI based sound system chips and it might be possible to replace sounds if the individual sound tracks can be separated out and replaced. The arcade guys have been doing it for decades so it's not impossible....

Hmmm...that sounds interesting, but you can't replace sounds by hacking a MIDI file. MIDI files contain the information needed to play a tune or a certain sequence of sounds, but MIDI files do not contain the sounds themselves, just numbers that refer to the specific sound to be played. The sound card (or sound engine) of the machine is where the sounds live, and it just sits there waiting to be told what to play.

The sounds can't be readily replaced. But, if these machines really are based on MIDI standards, you might be able to wire up a MIDI port and use a keyboard or synthesizer to play the MIDI files.

So, is that about as clear as mud??

Yes, that's true about MIDI, what I am looking to do is replace the tunes in the sound eprom though which I believe are in MIDI format. Most of these machines have some sort of MIDI capable sound chip for sounds. Newer models may also use some sort of digitized sound as well. The reason I am looking for header info is I want to try to identify the segments in the sound eprom. If I know the format of the header, I should be able to find and isolate each sound then replace them with sounds of the same or smaller size and reassemble a new eprom to be burned.

HERE is a link to the description of the MIDI file format.

Good luck, and keep us posted as to any progress you make.

Arby, you've probably forgotten more stuff than I've ever known
Coffee's ready, BTW. Made it maself, and it's a good batch too.

Toonces, if you can dump those eeproms and hack the sequences and the sounds...wow, that is going to bust the custom machines market wide open. Pretty ambitious on your part, but you are onto something here.

Newer machines are using digitized voices and instruments. If they're stored according to the MIDI standard (or better, the General MIDI standard), h*ll, you probably could burn a new eeprom with custom sounds and sequences.

And when you do, maybe you can hook me up with a custom that plays snippets of my favorite Blue Öyster Cult tunes Yeah, that's it!!

Man this sounds really good doesn't it ? I could go for a "real" Beatles conversion with their song library in a customized Pachislo !

Yeah, you could have a Beatles pachislo break out in a rendition of "I wanna hold your knob"..

That's Rob's site and that post was made almost a year ago. He's come a long way in making that auto-credit, auto-stop chip. I don't know if he's pursued the sound mod any further. He comes by here now and again, if he sees this maybe he'll give us an update if he has one.

I asked him about the programing of the chip so you can shut off the auto without messing up that first spin on a bonus game. He said the chip is pretty full but thinks he can get more programing in it. Will let me know.
