Well, now that we have had our little "diversion" and everyone knows my name (Zetareticuli1), I think it is time we got back to the project. By the way, I have plenty of pennies close at hand just in case I get stung.
Most of you know how I feel about using pots to control the sound level on these things, so it's not going to suprise anyone to find out I've installed a stereo L-Pad to adjust the volume level below that of a jet taking off. Hey, $7 for a stereo 8 ohm, 15 watt L-Pad ain't bad. I've included a photo of it with a wiring diagram showing how it's connected.

The other photo I've included is the schematic for the Chance Button on the Lumina frame. I'm throwing this out to the techies out there. Since Arby is being so kind as to send me an optical switch that may work, I won't be needing to come up with an alternitive method to duplicate it's function (keeping fingers crossed). But.....just in case.....I am open to suggestions and how one may do this other then an optical switch. Here is what I know about the Chance Button.:
Pin 1 is at 12 volts
Pin 2 is the return from the LED source for the Optical switch
Pin 3 is the return from the LED that lights the switch up when active
Pin 4 is the return from the phototransistor

The chance button on the frame is wired directly to that 4 pin pink connector on the cell I showed you earlier. With a resistor and LED wired across pins 1 and 2, the led stays lit, as it would in the switch. with the same setup between 1 and 3, the LED lights up during the cells post test then goes off. It starts flashing when the chance function is called during game play. Pins 1 and 4 make up the "switch" which goes open when the button is pressed and the light beam is broken between the LED and phototransistor. I have tried to connect other optical switches that were simular but not identical to the connector but I could not get it to work. There is some voodoo afoot me thinks in the cell logic. Anyway, I'm open to suggestions.

Well, yesterday I received the button from Arby and true to his fashion, it was packed up like Fort Knox. Then I took a closer look and saw that the packing material was MONEY........ Woohoo!!!!!! Honey, get me the scotch tape!!!!!!!!

I think this beehive project will be on hold a while.

Well, I've had some time to look over the optical switch that Arby sent me and as you can see, they are a little different. Anyone out there have any suggestions on how I might get it to work? In the photo, the drawing for a lumina frame chance button is on top and the switch Arby sent is on bottom.

Hey, don't worry about it, it's ok. Thank you for even looking in the first place. I'm quite sure we will be able to sort it out. But, hey, if you want to send me some more of that shredded money ...........

I got a bale of it still from over 15 years ago, the mint would sell it to people for packing material. Than some azs holes got cought trying to pass a taped bill, and they stopped selling it a bale is 2 x 2 x 3 foot and back than the shipping was free (Govn).

I still have fun with it

It looks like from the diagrams that the switch output on the one that Arby sent takes the connection low when the switch is active and the lumina one takes the connection high. So even if you swapped pins 3 & 4 to get the pinout right, the button still wouldn't work.

I suppose you could remove the transistor and rewire the new switch so the output goes directly to the photo-diode, but I don't know if that would be physically possible on the switch.

Ok, I think I have narrowed down the problem with the Bee Hive and the chance button. There appears to be a bad IC (IC8) on one of the sub PC boards (BSYW021A) of the Sub Controller Assembly. If anyone has a Bisty/Sankyo Sub Controller assembly with a BSYW021A board in it laying around collecting dust and would like to sell/trade what ever, PM me. I really want to fix this game because it's fun to play and it's special to me because it came from Arby and I really really feel bad about damaging it.

That's the left hand board of the three (viewed with the connectors on the other two boards at the top) ? That one is often different on each game, as it contains the drivers for the cell LEDs and motors.

The IC in question should be a transistor array chip which can be easily sourced and replaced. Either a TD62003 (equvalent to a ULN2003) if it has 16 pins, or a TD62083 (equivalent to a ULN2803) if it has 18 pins.
