Default Ok, what if it's still too loud with volume control?

So, I have a bunch of machines that I had volume controls installed on (same ones Milt/Stealth sells) and some of them are still too loud even with all the volume knobs turned down to minimum.

What can I do now? I'd be willing to learn how to solder if there is a solution involving some electronic components that will further decrease the volume...

When you turn down the volume controls they are still too loud? You shouldn't be able to hear anything at all if they are installed properly.

there is one of 2 things you can do put a larger resistance voulume controle in instead of teh ones you have ie if oy uhave 500 ohm controles in them fit 1k or you can solder a resister of your choice in line i dont have any idea of values to the components for pachislos but im sure jeff aniston1 will be along in a while or some one like to fill in the blanks

Factory slider is set to low too.

Yep, th espeakers still emit quite a bit of volume, even on the lowest setting. They do get louder when I turn them up, so the volume control is doing something.

Going to re-check the other machines when I get them hooked back up later tonight, but the first one sure is loud still.

You just need some inline resistors added. A variable 1k 3/4 watt cermet POT would guarantee you would have total control over your sound level we just installed these on 6 lumina frames, every one was grinning as I adjusted the volume to barely audible, with 8 pachinkos blasting in the same room it was horribly loud.

As Tulsa said, your volume should be able to be controlled from NO SOUND at all to full volume. Sounds like the controller is not working properly.

depends on the type of machine your putting them in if its one with the tiny pizeo speakers it requires larger resistance to lower the volume. 500 ohm wont put a dent in the volume try 1.5 k or as doc mentioned add a 1k resistor and you shoud be ok .

I've been looking for an excuse to learn how to solder.

Ok, so a resistor inline with the volume control? I wish I actually knew what that meant. Anyone have any beginner electronics, soldering, etc... resources they would recommend to get me up to speed?

I just bought these volume controls: 2 Volume Controls Pachislo Skill Stop Machines FREE SHP - eBay (item 290286500738 end time Jan-04-09 17:01:45 PST)

I installed them on an Ore no Sora machine as the instructions indicated (negative wires) and the volume is still too loud even when the knobs are turned all the way down. As stated above, they are obviously doing something since the machine gets louder if I turn them up.

I have to play with one speaker disconnected to keep the volume at an acceptable level. I read the suggestions above and don't understand any of it. So what can I do to get the volume down lower?

I am sorry to see that they do not work. Most 500 ohm pots should work, there are some that do need a higher value. ( mostly Sammy machines) . So far I have not had any of the one at I use, have this kind of trouble.
I do not recommend that you play the machine with the speaker disconnected. The amp does need to see a load on it.

Reading and re-reading this thread I have come to the following conclusions:

I have 500ohm resistors (volume controls) and need 1k resistors. The so called "volume controls" sold through various websites are nothing more than regular resistors that can be obtained at a place like radio shack with little bits of wire soldered to the posts.

SO, I can go to Radio Shack, get 1k resistors, swap them with the 500ohm ones I have in now and that should solve my problem?

Remember if you use only a resistor that the volume will not be adjustable. You must get the value of the resistor exactly or as close as possible to the correct value. That is why most use a variable pot of some kind.
If you have a ohm meter then check the pots you purchased to make sure they go from 0 to at least 500 ohms. They could be bad or wired wrong.
If they do work & it is still to loud then add either a 500 or 1000 ohm resistor in line. Also not sure why they have you wiring to the negative side. I normally wire mine to the positive side. I do not know if it makes a difference with these types of amps.

Sorry I meant "variable resistors". So from what I gather a 1k variable resistor would be superior than my allegedly 500ohm variable resistors.

As for the wiring, on the current installed controls, how would I know if they are bad? Some wire came pre-soldered on two of the posts. If the solder points are bad would that cause a problem like this?

The volume controls do seem to be doing something. If I turn them up the machine does get louder, and if I turn them down it gets quieter. It is definately softer than it used to be... just still too loud.

Since some level of volume control (though not complete control) is being obtained through the negative wire, is the positive wire definately the more desireable one?

    Also nice video on soldering.
