LD, I bought a Popeye machine on Ebay recently and it came in a cabinet. The balls were collected under the machine by a cut up 2 litre drinks bottle ie a plastic coke bottle cut in half using the screw top section to make a funnel. The guy who made the machine simply cot a hole the size of the coke top out of the cabinet frame (undr where the bals fall) and slotted the upside down bottle neck in to the hole. I put hundreds of balls thru the machine/cabinet and they all fell in to the funnel (made from the bottle) and then dropped in to a ball tray bellow. I cant quite picture what you want the funnel for but if its to collect balls under the machine try the coke bottle funnel. I dont have a pic on digital format to put on the site but it was a really clever way to collect balls as coke bottles are cheep and easily available.
In other posts people refer to balls bouncing around a lot in cabinets etc, if you have a cabinet where balls drop any distance then just use foam/latex carpet underlay to line any ball recepticle or cabinat internals, the underlay can be fitted very neatly to any wooden surface using carpet spray glue, it minimises any ball noise and being absorbant and spongy it stops balls bouncing all over by taking the energy out of the bounce.
Dont know if any of these points help you but they may, Good luck, Pete.

LD I have similar stand, with the paint tray (original test bed) and I just put a cardboard trough to direct the balls into the tray. a couple staples in the bottom and your in business.
Nice job I am glad you picked up your tools and got R done.

Here are the pics of the one I built and did the funnel thing with. I did not even have to cut the wood. Bought it at Home Depot and they cut it to all the lengths for me. Nice deal to have in the winter.

I put the feet on the inside to help hold the weight of the machine.

    Smile Re: Polish carpenter :)

I used Minn. Brads idea, I bought funnels at discount auto for 99 cents each and 1 inch conduit clamps at a hardware store for 20 cents.

it looks nice and neat and the funnel is high enough to the top that you can't remove it or it can't fall out.

most of the balls hit the side of the funnel and slow down, very little bounce at the bottom.

building 3 of these stands cost me less than $10.00 each

Very nice LD. I like the conduit clamp idea. The funnel does work well at slowing the balls down. Sometimes you can hear that last ball spinning around the funnel before it falls.
