I replaced all bad ones and it's been working fine for several hours now, including one very long string of fevers. I guess it was isolated to those two units.

I tried 68 ohm resistor 1W it works great for sound with it being soft to mid range.
This is using the three position switch on the back

TRW Carbon Comp Resistors 1W 68 ohm 5%

Sounds OK, I make it just under 0.5w dissipation in the resistor with the volume switch in max position.

At half it's power rating a carbon film resistor would be expected to rise in temperature to around 20 degrees C (70 degrees F) above ambient air temperature, so it would get warm but not too hot to touch.
