I've driven a car that runs on cooking oil before. A friend of mine had my old diesel car from me to use as a test vehicle for his attempt at bio-diesel production. Car worked just as well as it did on regular fuel, but smelt like a mobile fish and chip shop !

My current car runs on LPG (propane), as it's a lot cheaper over in the UK due to the regular fuels being taxed so highly (over $6 / gallon at the moment).

$6 a gallon.. That's sick. Ripple's cheaper, run it on that!

It's only cheaper over here in the UK due to the tax situation. Before tax the LPG is more expensive than petrol/diesel, but the tax is so low that the street price is about half of the regular fuels.

I've had this car converted for five years now. The conversion cost about $2000, but four years of driving 50,000/year means that I've saved nearly 10 times that amount in fuel costs.

They're a bit chilly in the winter and it's most difficult to grocery shop on one.

My daughter got a Honda (100 mpg) scooter as a BD present last year, but this year she got her permit to drive to school. She left the scooter VERY quickly so she could drive the car, listen to music, be comfy. "Her" Camry gets 34 MPG, so that isn't too bad.

So what are you selling that one year old scooter for, I think Eddie's in the market.

I ride all year around I have an electric vest and gloves that keep the temp around 80 F. For full groceries you are correct but for most short hops and runs to stores for small items, movies, commutes to work, trips to friends etc which most people use cars for it is way too much overkill and really a colossal waste. I commute everyday to work by Motorcycle and what do I see
thousands of cars with only the driver inside and no one else. Here in the city that can be Sniveling 18 year olds in Hummers and mostly Spoiled Rich 18yr old girls on the phone in BMWs, Escalades,Range Rovers Etc. Most of course are just sitting in traffic burning up more gas. Its excess and a waste.
Europeans all ride or have ridden scooters Mopeds and motorcycles not as recreation as has become the norm in the US but as viable cheap quick transportation. Granted in Europe and here in the city the spaces for driving and the distances are not as great as for those in most of America.
I think its more of our attitude about cars than anything else as well as all of the years of the negative motorcycle images portrayed by Hollywood starting with the Wild Ones in the 40s. I do see a change however in the city here with more scooters being seen than ever before. Of course everyone wants TVs, BBQs, Lounge chairs and Million God knows what else that has nothing to do with transportation in their cars BECAUSE THEY ARE STUCK IN TRAFFIC FOR SO MANY HOURS! becasue they are all in cars! Hopefully one day The Logic of two wheeled transportation will Prevail.

I am still hopeful she'll use the moped/scooter this spring and summer. She is able to drive it anywhere and the permit she has for the car (she's only 15) allows her to drive back and forth to school on an assigned shortest route only. Plus, our thoughts were she could use the moped at college, etc. Don't know if she will. She's a bit like me and enjoys 2-wheelers, but am not quite sure if she enjoys them more than the comfort and the amenities in the car.

If Eddie wants it, we could maybe make a deal???

I don't want anyone else in my car.

When gas was hitting $3 a gallon here, my mind conjured up many different bikes to own. I was leaning towards a Honda Shadow. Then gas prices came down and so did that thought.

I love riding, it's a blast and there's no freer feeling. When it's all said and done though, I need my car, I want my car.

Electric vest and gloves? Didn't even know they made such a thing.

I agree with Tulsa, but it's nice to have both vehicles if possilbe. That said, if I lived in a city, I wouldn't ride and didn't do so again until moving to a small town. Too many crazies out there. Out where I live, it is more likely to hit a deer than another auto.
