Default Electrical question on slot mach power cord replacement

    Hi all,

I have been getting a tingle from the chrome on the front of my fever queen, I checked the power cord and it was 2 prong, and inside on the power supply I could see the ring terminal with a cut green ground wire.

My question is this, I have a new 3 prong cord but on the power supply the original cord connects with a plastic connector to the power supply, do I just clip that cord leaving a few inches of leads to connect the new cord? if so how do I attach the new cord? (wire nuts? crimp on butt connectors?)

Basically I am just wondering the safest and best way to couple the wires together inside the machine.

Hope this message is not too confussing of what I am trying to accomplish.

    Thanks in advance!

PS I did do a search but could not find the way to connect the 2 wires.

id use butt connectors then clamp down the wire so there is no strain on the connectors. WELCOME!!

I have your answer I did this before. I suggest for safty you add an inline fuse on the positive side. check this thread out

That fuse deal is that for power supply too? (it looks like a transformer in the pic).

Do you also recommend the butt connectors? or wire nuts? (tried to tell in your pic, but my eyes aren't what they used to be!)

    Thanks

wire nuts are for temporary connections or when protected inside a fixture or box.

Flip the cord around , one prong is ground on a 2 prong

except of course in a trailer or building such as an apartment, where each unit is actually fed by a sub-panel with a non-bonded ground.

I was looking for the pictures that people referred to but was unable to find them.. If you are going to use wire nuts, it's ok but i recommend the crimping wire nuts if you are going to do that, this guarantees that they will not come off... i myself always solder the connections. An in-line fuse or circuit breaker is a good idea..

This was discussed at length some time before.

What you're probably feeling isn't the power from the outlet... but rather from the fluorescent lights' high voltage. Over time, the plastic insulators from the lamp connectors tend to break down. The more they break down, the more "juice" you'll feel.

If a transformer is used, the power lines are isolated from the machine, anyway. Spinning the plug in the outlet won't make a difference.

HOWEVER, you CAN (and should) "bleed" off that extra HV to ground. Find a green/yellow stripe wire that's probably hanging inside the machine somewhere, and tie it to the green/yellow stripe line on your 3-prong power cord. THAT'S the ground!!! NEVER connect that wire to either side of a non-polarized plug... or either side of ANY plug, for that matter. Only to the ground prong.

In addition, make sure the ground strap from the power supply to the metallic door is making good connection. It's probably green with a yellow stripe also... OR a bare braided cable, with or without a clear cover.

As far as the method to use to make the connection... either a butt connector OR a wire nut will work just fine. You won't be moving that wire enough after you make the connection to worry about it being proper, and these things aren't even close to being UL underwritten in the first place.
Most vendors make the two wire connection with wire nuts because it's quick and easy. Unfortunately, not too many make that ground connection, or even bother to use a grounded plug.

    Hope that helped.

Ok, I took and put on the new 3 wire cord and used the green ground in it to a ring terminal on the power supply, for now I used wire nuts (stores are closed right now, so I will get butt connectors tomorrow).

I am not getting any tingles at all, so it looks like it is fixed. The new cord is about twice the wire size of what was on it before... ashame I had to use the little pigtail (the way the original cord connects to the power suppy) I would really liked to have seen the heavier wire 100% of the run.

Thanks all for the help! it's much appreciated!

    John

theres no need to replace the wire nuts if there good and tight wrap them tightly with electrical tape down to the wiring about an inch or so and you'll never have to worry about it again

I notice the same tingle on all my machines. so just to be safe, I put three prong power cords on all my machines. Rather than trying to use what appears to be the cut ground wire on the power supply, I just made up a ground wire and used one of the existing screws on the metal frame around the inside of the case as a ground.

Then I cut off the two wire plug and attached the hot, neutral and my ground wire to it, using crimp connectors or wire nuts. I secured it to the inside of the case with cable clamp. No more tingles !!!!!
