Sony set the MSRP at an unrealistic level given demand for the initial shipment. Sony also specifically allowed lineups, instead of wristbands (where everyone shows up on the day, gets a band, and random numbers are called). Wristbands get no press. Multi-day lineups do. Lineups allow the unemployed/students/etc. to make cash off of the system proportional to their investment in time. Wristbands are a non-guaranteed lottery that might do that for some.

If there's scum here, it's Sony. But I figure Sony's just getting valuable free publicity and allowing a few folks (who happen to have days to camp available) to make some holiday cash.

Most concert tickets are now priced so high that there's not much scalper action left, which I, in some ways, prefer. Sony could have eliminated the lineups with a much higher price and "Gold Limited First Edition" approach. They they would have been blamed for greed, and there would be no lineups.

I do think that I might have been happier with the wristband approach, which gives working folks the same chance as everyone on the intro deal.

But I think that Sony figured "publicity + help the 'poor' = win-win". They certainly knew exactly what they were doing.

Sony had three choices with supply insufficient to meet demand:

    1) Low, enforced MSRP and allow lineups
    2) Low, enforced MSRP and require wristbands
    3) Unenforced (or unspecified) MSRP

There was 100% certainty in what would result:
Scenario 1 gives those who can live rough an hourly return.
Scenario 2 lets everyone have an equal shot at the deal, and ironically puts fewer into the hands of speculators, raising the eBay price still further (since more actual gamers--not resellers--would get the machines).
Scenario 3 lets retailers or Sony itself make more of the "scum" money.
Or there's choice 4: wait until there's enough supply to closely equalize a given enforced MSRP.
I'm just saying Sony knew exactly what they were doing.

To show how dumb I am, I saw one of these lines and thought "what dedicated gamers". On the way out, I looked again. Then I realized who was actually there. And I figured, hey, if some of those folks have a bit happier Thanksgiving courtesy of Sony...what the heck.

I already have plenty to be thankful for.

i seriously doubt that Sony gives two sticks about whether the poor make a buck off these units . I also seriously doubt Sony even had a shortage of units .If they did I'm sure it was intentional as you said it brings free publicity and as Madonna has shown many times over any publicity is good publicity especially if its free....... they'll sell tons of units even after the holidays by doing it this way and for msrp prices.... not discounting after the holidays just to get rid of them like most other toys .... no doubt at all this is an arranged sales gimmick for sure .........

There are about 12,000 of those greedy zit faced 14 year olds that are squirming on ebay because there retirement plan has failed. The average sellers is clearing $350 profit right now. Factor in their time and they made minimum wage with considerable risk.

Sony is part to blame because they limit the supply on purpose to drive the people & kids into a frenzy to want this product.. If Sony was to supply the product like any other product, with a continuous supply then people would not be in such a rush to get it & pay the stupid prices for it....If someone wants to put thier unit on Ebay for $1000 there will be someone who wants it. they don't want to wait in line or waste their time, so they will pay the stupid price for someone else to do it. But if the stores were full of them then there would be no market for them on eBay.

Sony has already dropped the 20gb model and just has the 60gb sitting on store shelves.

Playstation 2 sales have gone up since the release of PS3

they just release the silver ps2 again after selling out at Xmas time.

Xbox360 Elite are still around in stores here.

the Wii is still impossible to find and still selling strong on Ebay

    even used models

If you want Blu ray the PS3 is the easiest way to go.

From a gamers outlook Wii has the upper hand.

I prefer the Xbox 360 fantastic grafics and lots of free arcade games and demo downloads at Xbox site.

and I get the Xbox360 mag every month with a dixk for $24.99 a year.

Sony magazine with disk folded right after I subscribed for a year, they gave me 3 years of PSM magazine with no disk in return.

Sony just ok'd the first price drop on the PS3. The 60gb is now $499 and a new 80gb took over the $599 mark.

Cicruit City already has the 60gb with extra wireless controller and 5 blu-rays for $499. This is a deal.

I love my PS3 - it is much more than a game machine, but a damn fine game machine at the same time . I found the Wii to be fun (at first) but the "gimmick" wore off quick, and the graphics are really no better than the Cube, so I got bored. I guess kids would really like it tho' - I am just too old to move around while I play video games ><

It is no surprise the Sony has cut the price of the PS3. I was reading an article today that said that the Nintendo sold 6 wii to every 1 PS3 in Japan in June.
