Allthough a picture is worth a thousand words, don't be intimidated by all the pictures. The proceedure is very simple and quick once you get familiar with it and the concept is the same for all manufacturers. After all, these machines were made for easy cell swapping in the Parlors, either for servicing or changing unpopular games.

I've found that all the Lumina cases, 2005 and 2006 are physically the same. I swap my 2005 and 2006 cells into them all the time without any problems.

There is a big difference however between the Sankyo Victory and the Lumina case series and they are not interchangeable.

I believe that any cell of the same frame series should theoretically be interchangeable. I could be wrong in that there are many manufacturer's cases that I've not seen yet. My belief is based upon my experience with the Sankyo Victory and Lumina cases as well as the Heiwa "ThunderZone/Batman" case and the Taiyo "Penguin, Apollo, Giant 7, Sore Jansi and Gachinko" case.

Beware however of a couple of "Gotchas" such as; the Heiwa sound board is not attached to the cell but must be paired with the cell it is designed for and that some cell "main basis" boards are physically mounted to the rear sub-chassis and are not attached directly to the cell. These must also be matched and swapped along with the cell.

But once again, it looks and sounds more complicated than it really is.

Congrats on your new Julie. You're going to love it. Thanks for the advice about swapping cells out. I just ordered a Star Blazers cell from Arby. I'm going to give it a go (when I decide to give Julie a break)

    All the best.

Now that I have an Arbyized Indy coming to me shortly, it looks like I might have to start looking for some cells too. As 3 different cells that I want ( Star Blazers, Julie's Pinball and Evangelian Second Impact) are supported by the case. I never had much luck with Yahoo Japan so I might have to get some more late Xmas presents for myself by getting some more stuff from Arby. It makes sense with limited space and not having to build extra cabinets for every new machine. Plus you get some more internal knowledge of the machines if you are switching them out.

Also thanks to everyone for the tips and tutorials on cell swapping

Thanks for all the info. It looks like everyone except dishpan talked exclusively about the Lumina or Bisty cases. Does that mean that it would be harder to get cells for other brand cases? Looking at my Nishijin case, I see there are tabs similar to those in Arby's pictures, so I assume you CAN pull this cell out.

And this is probably dumb, but is the only way to get a Lumina case, to buy one of the machines that come in one...meaning that you can't get a case by itself?

you can buy a case by itself and you can swap out cells in as far as i know any modern machien.(as long as they match) The reason i think that it is mainly the lumina case mentioned as it is one of the most populer cases with alot more cells for it than some of the other cases

yahoo got them and you can get them shipped here to the states. You need to go thru an agent.
Cost will depend on the newist of the frame as to cost, your agent will be paid 10% onthe auction and shipping to him, than shipping here to you and again the agent fee for all the packing for here.
I got frame in as little as $325 and as high as $550 for new.

so it is work on yourself to shop for your best price.

Although a case may look similar, there are sometimes older and newer versions (different connectors). So far all Sankyo/Bisty cels within a similar case line fit that case (Lumina 05-06, Victory 03-04, Tatsumaki 02, FF99/FF 96-01, Stellar 92-95).

I bet there was much Singing & Dancing in the Tulsa Household yesterday!!!

Just be careful when you're out and about in the real world - as singing it at the top of my voice in a small town where I live - meant I have been getting strange looks ever since.................

On second thoughts - that could be for an entirely different reason?

Well after the great Arby was good enough to put up the thread showing the excellent photos & instructions on removing a cell I thought I would give it a go. The pictures made it appear to be a very simple job (I think probably because they were clear & simple), something I wouldn't have thought simple by just looking in the back of my Star Wars.

Anyway I have to be honest at this point and say that I am not very technically minded, but sod it I thought I would give it a go - what could be the worst that could happen

Cutting a long story short, it really is as simple as Arby, the Doc & others have said. It took me less than 15 minutes to get it dis-assembled, take a couple of pictures to show you & then put it back together.

    SWBefore.JPG

    SWCell.JPG

    Emptycase.JPG

    SWBacktogether.JPG

The first picture is of my Star Wars before taking the cell out, the 2nd is of the cell removed, the 3rd picture is of my empty case (ready for my new cell of maybe Julie or Indy - Santa you listening or reading this ?) & the last picture is of it all back together & working.

So in summary from someone with no experience of doing anything like this before is it really is as simple as it looks. I certainly will now be looking to get some new cells (PM to Doc on its way )

Cool...looks very easy to do! For the price range Arby mentioned and the "hassle" of getting one, it sounds like it's better to just pick up a machine that comes in a 2005 - 2006 Lumina case.

So isn't StarWars a 2004 machine? If I got one of those, the case would still be compatible, yes?
