    Default CR Indiana Jones SF-T

Well, my Indy finally arrived from Japan early this week and finally got a chance to dust it off and have a good look. Initially I wasn’t going to buy this game thinking that it was too cheesy and too similar to Star Wars, but had caved in during another one of those week moments that seem to be occurring with increasing frequency. Once again I’ve been very lucky as this game arrived in pristine condition. Don’t you just love it when the brass nails are still so clean and shiny that they sparkle like jewels?

Earlier today I came across an eBay auction from a familiar seller, for an older “Egyptian” Pachinko labeled as Indiana Jones for a special BIN for $150.00. Now I have to climb upon my soap box for a moment… There is much to admire of the Japanese culture and their forthright people who have honor and take pride in what they say and do. I have yet to receive any material that has been misrepresented or abused. Everything has been treated with respect. More North Americans would do well to take a page out of their book by putting people and relationships ahead of objects or money. OK, that felt better.

If you’ve been living under a rock (or locked in your Pachi Casino) this game is based upon the Indiana Jones series of movies that first came to theatres in 1981. The game features 3D animated bobble headed characters and footage from all three movies. These machines entered the Japanese halls in mid April of 2006 and were released in three versions; the full spec. SF-T (1/399.6) blue cell with a picture of Henry and Indiana Jones, the half spec. MF-T (1/293.9) and the ST-7 (1/225.2) which does not have the 100 round time saving mode after a bonus. The last two models feature a tan/orange cell background with a larger picture of Indiana Jones without Henry. By May, this game was found in approximately 30% of the Parlors but then like Star Wars, quickly faded out to almost nothing today.

My overall impression confirms that this is Star Wars with a different and more light-hearted, child friendly theme. The general game play is very similar and the case is the familiar white Sankyo Lumina model. There is the same large video screen and a large animatronic found on the right. Instead of R2-D2, it is Indiana in a tunnel, sitting inside a tram car. There is the same ball gutter track on the right side of the cell if you shoot the ball too hard, but no second start pocket as found on the Star Wars. Back-lighted temple scaffolding is located directly above the Indiana Jones title whose colored lights alternate smoothly during play. Instead of a light saber, the screen is framed on top and on the right side with movable support pillars to help give the illusion of a tunnel collapsing. A sign of quality and attention to detail is that the small video screen area framed by the falling beam and pillar changes to show jewel encrusted dirt. The nails and the play are also totally left centric which is now common on many modern machines.

Looking closer at the cell however you begin notice that this is not your average modern Pachinko. The starter pocket is where it is supposed to be but has no second ball pocket or flippers below it. Instead, the flipper sensor has been moved up higher on the left side of the cell to make room for the second starter pocket found just below it and to the right. It is found immediately below the “hidden” ball entrance to the ramp stage below the video screen. At the bottom center of the cell, where the payout bonus door is supposed to be, there is a large animated gold skull that is back lighted in red. There are wings that open during bonuses on the bottom of each side of the skull. Periodically the skull will tilt back, the eyes turn bright white, and a booming laugh echoes out foretelling a change in background scenery or perhaps a sign of a reach to come.

The cell’s eye-candy theme is gold and ruby red. There are gold and imbedded jewels everywhere. The animation is of high quality, the character’s eyes blink and the coins sparkle. All of the familiar Indiana Jones’s trappings can be found here; treasure, artifacts, falling rocks, traps, snakes, guns and whips. As with Star Wars, the action and pacing is lively. There is always something happening. The reach action and notices occur frequently; Idols move, birds fly by, monkeys howl; hieroglyphics glow and rocks fall. The movie’s popular highlight scenes are faithfully represented, either as movie clips or featured reach action. The major reaches include the rolling giant boulder, the Idol for sand swap, the tramcar ride, the broken suspension bridge and the prerequisite whip action. The speech is mostly Japanese with a small amount of heavily accented English.

As with most of the newer games there is an “Indiana Chance” and “Indiana Mission” play modes with lowered bonus odds.

Yes, this game is cheesy. Yes, this game is Star Wars redone. And yes, it is staying in my collection. It is Indiana Jones and it is a good time. Had it been released prior to Star Wars, perhaps that game would now be compared with Indiana Jones instead.

Besides, as you can see, my two year old grand daughter has given it her approval.

Thanks Dishpan for another great review

I certaintly appreciate the time you take to bring everyone a flavour of the machine & its gameplay.

When I first saw this was coming out I thought that it is definately another one to add to the collection, but with already having SW I am now probably 50/50 and maybe I should head for a Julie

    Anyway thanks again

Thanks for the detailed review. The one I bought is just like yours (I was worried for a second). I assume the original versions will be the most sought after. There are more on ebay for less than $300 "Buy it Now" Does the volume control suffice?

You will really enjoy Julie as the game play, music and cell elements are completely different than that of Star Wars.

You were worried that our taste in Pachinkos merged? I'd think that would be a good thing. :13: I have nine Sankyo Lumina and six Victory case games and they all need aftermarket volume controls. It is too bad that the Pachinko manufacturers can't take a page out of a Pachislo manufacturer book such as Net and put in decent digital volume controls.

Thanks Dattia. She's got her Grand Father's DNA after all.
She is attracted to the sounds and lights and has been playing Pachislo and Pachinkos since she was one. (and yes, she does prefer balls over tokens, but will play either machine type equally.)

No.......She was being thoughtful. She wanted to show him how much she missed him by buying him a Star Wars machine.

Ah, perhaps you were refering to the "Egyptian Indiana". It is in all likelyhood a fine machine. I merely object to the "creative advertising" used to misrepresent a product and create confusion in the marketplace simply to make a fast buck by piggybacking onto the rush generated by a newer model and theme.

I have yet to meet a Pachi that I didn't like. It's just that some themes resonate well and become the latest desireable model. As a contrast, one of my games that comes to mind is "A Cold Wintry Wind" by Heiwa which has a wandering Samurai theme and would easily be overlooked. I purchased the cell which easily fits my ThunderZone case. This game is under the radar of most people and has a very sedate pace of play which is why I like it so much. It is very Japanese in every respect and would make an ideal lounge game as the music and play is very gentle and soothing; just the ticket after a harrowing day at work. It has an unusual feature with an enclosed space in front of the video screen where small styrofoam balls are blown into a winter snow storm. One man's bust is another's treasure.

Snow? What Snow? We don't call it snow up here until you sink up to your waist in it. Until then it is just called precipitation.
