I had an issue like that once. I used a resister before the volume control, also mad sure the factory 3 position switch is in the lowest setting.

Arby put fixed resistors in three of the machines he "ARBY-IZED" for me.

The ones he installed are 69 Ohms (blue /white/ black). These make the sound level just right. If you wanted a little more volume you could go with 60 Ohms (blue / black / black).

These have been in use now for over two months with out any burn out issue.

No matter what you install, as chrisdice stated, make sure that the factory volume control's are set to their lowest setting. This will help take the load off of the after market one's you install.

Here is an automatic resistor calculator. Just plug in the color codes on the resistor and it will give you the value. :

This is getting rediculous! There has to be a way to safely silence these machines to a tolerable level. HELP!

This is not the best idea but it works for me, I have 2 volume pots in a row on each speaker on my Julie as it has smoked 3 sets in the past. this works as I turn both down a small amount so the heat is spread out instead of getting just one hot. A resister in line with a volume makes more sense but I am lazy and this works so far.

Might I suggest the 10 watt wirewound power resistors from the local Radio Shack? Four 50-ohms brought Aladdin back to a reasonable volume for me. (And for the wife, who occasionally likes to do things like watch TV...)

I just picked up a Speed Racer last weekend that had no volume controls. I installed these resistors and they worked great. Now I can use the factory switch on low for quiet play or move it to medium for party time and the sound level is perfect.
