the distortion could be caused by a few factors such as a bad pot , defective speaker(s) or a defective amp all of which will cause noise or "distortion" my suggestion is that you by pass the volume controller that was added and check the speakers out without the add on if it sounds OK try adding a low value resistor (47 ohm) and see if it sounds OK if so just replace the pot or use the ones from Arby . the point I'm trying to get across is it might not be the pot if its a machine that got alot of use in the parlors .....Arby has a tendency to pick cherry machines and can afford to sell at a premium price for that reason .other vendors will take the bottom of the barrel and you get what you pay for......usually adding volume controls has a tendency to muffle not cause distortion and most theses machine have overdriven amps and mediocre speakers installed .

Sorry Tulsa ,Some things Just can't be fixed and I believe stuey's hearing was a defect from the factory ..........Send him back and get a replacement.....

Hi Alstonj1, thanks for your comments. I am hoping it is the volume control, as obviously this would be more simple to correct than defective amp.

It seems that when I adjust the control, even by a fraction, it makes the distortion worse. Also, it seems to be more distorted the lower the volume is, so Im hoping that indicates a problem with the control. I dont know, but Im guessing that a problem with the amp would not cause distortion by fractional adjustment of the control.

Anyway, Ive ordered the controls Arby recommended so when they arrive I will sweap them over and let you all know what happens.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and advice - I know I seem to be always asking questions, and I really do appreciate everyones help and advice ;o)

    Thanks,

    Mark

Don't worry, I am capable of installing volume controles, I love to solder!!!

Only 2 or 3 of my pachis (out of 11) are a bit loud, so it hasn't been much of a problem........anyway most of my time has been spent making 11 cabinets, so when those are finally finished maybe I look into some volume controls!

    Evening all,
Just to let you know I have now swapped the installed volume control for the excellent set Arby recommended. It was very simple to install, and Im sure it has reduced the distortion - especially at low volumes. I must admit, sometimes I think there might still be a little distortion, but I might just be being too picky ;o)

Now I have got used to the issues starting the machine, and the sound, Im going to get on with enjoying it.

Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice, and it probably wont be too long until Im looking to add another to the collection! Ive seen some pictures of Julie Pinball, which would look great next to the Theatre of Magic pinball in the games room, so I'd better start saving...............

    Cheers,

    Mark

Yes Julie the Pinball would be an excellent choice!

It really lives up to the Hype, and not many Machines do that!

I can't see me ever getting bored with it!
