I would say that the max bet only machine is just an adaptation to how people probably played the 123 bet 5 line machines....sort of like how modern pachinko has shifted to left side play...(people tended to only play the left side anyway, so manufacturers saw an opportunity to make better use of the right side (fun and flashy stuff and bigger LCDs) to attract more players to their machines.

Plus I'm sure with all the new features and more reliance on LCDs, it is probably just easier for a manufacturer to design all the game play for 5 lines, instead of having to worry about making single line play fun as well...

Of course I really don't know what I'm talking about, so my best guess is that most players played all 5 lines anyway, so why not make the games play the way people want to play them...???

I agree with Stuey 1 bet is a 1 line win option 3 is a five line possible win.It only makes sense to bet 3 and get 5 chances to win. I used to play on slots with the 1,2,3 option the theory some of us had is bet small on the loser spins, big on the more possible to win spins, ( a whole different discussion on these theory's) after misreading a machine and losing a 777 because it fell on a diagonal and I bet a single line I always bet max from that point on.
This was back when I was in college and had no money because I also worked at a tribal casino.
