You forgot to add duct tape to the list.

duct tape is in a separate class, along with aluminum tape and filament tape
when in doubt make it stout.
glue it, screw it, and put brackets on it. Then foam it. this is how a California hill side home owner insisted any work on the house had to be done. This was not my job but my sisters boyfriend at the time. Crazy Californians!

I'm a big believer in making it strong. The furniture I build may not win any beauty contests, but you could park a truck on it.

After reviewing logicprobe's "Fooling sensors" post, I decided to add a cheater button to this cabinet.

I used a blue arcade pushbutton. Partially because I thought it would look good, but mostly because I had some on hand. Hit the big blue button and it's the same as if a ball went in the start pocket.

And another view of the button. Note that the microswitch has points for both normally open and normally closed. You want normally closed for this application.

And here's the spot where the button wires in (Yellow connector) on the off chance that someone with this same model wants to do this mod.

I really have no good reason for having done this, I'll probably only ever use it when I'm showing the machine off to someone. I guess I just did it because it was fun.

This figures, not more than a week ago my wife made me clean up a bit and I must have thrown out 10 mouse pads. I'm very rough on them since I program by day and game by night. Before I started using a track ball I would go through a mouse pad every three months or so.

The mouse pads with the plastic on them usually will start to separate from the rubber if they are older and well used. I don't know about a new one, sorry.

Thanks for the sound dampening suggestion.

It's worth saying again that the mouse pads made a huge difference in the noise level. You can still hear the balls hit, but the sound has changed from a clattery racket to a muted thud.

My wife still thinks it makes too much noise though.
