I am not getting wound up.. I just find it strange that asking a question, then following up with the solution can cause offence.

No hard feelings from my side, but I do worry that my constant questioning may annoy some people, which is never my intention.. I just like to learn!!

Yow! I just picked up a Slotter Kintaro machine (I'm a big fan of the anime), and it almost makes more noise when it's doing nothing than when it's going full-tilt.

I've been thinking about noise since I got my Sakura pachinko machine. I know the standard practice is to put a pot in line with the speaker, like a rheostat. This works, but since the amplifier is only set up for an eight or 16 ohm load, putting something like a five kilohm pot in series results in an extremely small effective range of pot shaft travel. In my experience, it was really hard to set.

In building speaker systems, when you want to match driver output levels in a cabinet (after the crossover), you use something called an L-pad (or loss-pad), which regulates the amount of current drawn by the speaker but always presents a consistent load impedance to the amplifier. You can buy these from Parts Express, and there is a good site online (lalena.com) that will tell you how to build one for discrete (non-adjustable) values. A 3 dB pad will halve your output power, a 6 dB pad will quarter it.

On the Kintaro machine, the big problem is electrical noise. I'm hoping I can pad the output enough to minimize this and still get appreciable volume for the "desired" output.

I'm willing to continue discussing this with anybody who is interested

Thanks to all for your input. I am really new to this, and I have learned so much from this site that I'm sure it has made the hobby twice as enjoyable.

Now, if I only had more room...

I don't have this machine, but saomeone should let you know what you need.
if you start a new thread you will attract more attention to your issue. Just don'r be surprised If 3 posts in some starts talking about their bunions. Thats fine its what we do here.
BTW I am paraphrasing my 5th post this is what I was told. just passing the torch.

    How are the bunions SID?
I found the ultimate solution to noisey slots, put 1 (or a few) pachinkos in the room, their noise had me turning the volume back up on the slots!

instead of a 5k pot try a 500 ohm pot youll have much more range to set it to your liking 5k is way to much and youll only get a small amount of adjustment before it shuts your volume off completely if you use a stereo 500 ohm youll have both the range your looking for and balance as well .

I tried a 500 ohm pot on my bunions and it helped immensely.

I have a 120 degree 1k in sinbad and it is touchy hard to get just right, I picked up a 15 turn 1k at radio shack and it is a breeze to set just right, bunions are doing fine.
