    Default Need speaker recommendations

    for a MP3 player.

The long and short of it is that I inherited my friend's old MP3 Player. It, of course, has a headphone jack and USB port but I'm looking for some good but reasonably priced, preferably self-powered, speakers so I can use it like a cheap alternative to a stereo in my room. Any suggestions?

    Check out http://www.ilounge.com

This site's dedicated to iPods and has a huge section for accesories (speakers, earbuds, cases, car-hookups, etc...). This is complete with reviews/photos, prices, where to buy, etc...

    It's a great resource!

Thanks, it's not an iPod but it's probably all the same when it comes to outputs as long as it has the right jacks/ports.

Yup, the 1/4" jack is pretty much the standard, I'd still say go for some computer speakers, there are tons of em out there.. I saw a 3 piece set from creative at walmart the other day (2 speakers & sub) for $30

I would agree with finding some powered computer speakers with a subwoofer. I use Philips MMS430 system. I believe they're rated at 100 watt total and do a great job with the MP3 player. I got them for $17 from Philips Outlet and would love to find a deal like that again. Find something with comprable specs and I think you'll really enjoy them. Good luck with your search, I'll keep an eye out for you also.

Here you can get some factory refurbs direct from the manufucturer on eBay.

    Harman Kardon / JBL

Here's the style I purchased from them. They sound great and I got them for about half of what they retail for. I use them for my MAC.

    Lightbulb Re: Need speaker recommendations

    Hi Rupan,

I've been using a setup like this on my PC for about 8 years now.

The satellite boxes are about 3" square and the subwoofer really moves air. You wouldn't think that these little plastic boxes were capable of sounding as good as they do. A standard 1/8" stereo plug hooks it up to your MP3 player. I'm admittedly not an audiophile (although I used to be a musician) and this system sounds good to me considering it's an inexpensive 2-way setup.

Those clear acrylic H/K Soundsticks are pretty damn sexy, though.

Hey, it was probably just the fumes from the solder and that could happen to anyone. Besides, I always carry one of those 1/4 to 1/8 adapters in my briefcase for emergencies.

Speaking strictly for myself, the most obvious thing to heat up with a soldering iron is a cold joint. I've done this several times and it really does work. Then again, I don't know too much about this electronic stuff.

Well, then... you DO know not to drop... er... use acid type, right?
Only the kind with resin in it.

    LOL...Treading softly here...

Yes, we know not to...uh...use the acid type. Nope, never. No flux either!
Resin (rosin?) was the only thing in my kit for a long time. But the resin that's out there now, the fumes from that stuff would put me into a coma.
