well if you were to ask me, i would think this was more of a community project for the greater good of the pachinko enthusiast.

a ball lifter easily made by the average Joe/Jill as a DIY alternative to buying a regular lifter. and not a lets build it and sell it sort of thing.. thats my thoughts on the matter. but then again i dont speak for everyone.... just Sid and the voices in his head...

For direct drive yes, though each single rotation of the BBQ would release a number of balls (don't know how many yet, but it's a critical number to know. Geared it could spint faster, but with weight the direct drive would be good.

I see where Arby's going though, I have three machines side by side, so it would be nice if one lifter could push enough balls for all three.

augers for post hole digging range from 2" -36" in dia. the only sharp part is the cutting edge on the face not along the whole edge.

If it works, I guess such a screw would move a lot of balls (so the motor would have to have a lot of torque, but not much speed, but I'm wondering if it would have to be tilted like an archimedes screw in order to get the balls started (as opposed to one at a time).

To move one ball at a time in a helical chain, you could get by with a half inch auger (or 3/8 - 5/8), and there would theoretically be less friction against the sidewalls of the 1" ID tube as the ball bearing would be rolling as they are lifting (I suppose same for the larger auger). Given a good center mount at the loading end, the balls themselves would tend to centre the auger once there are a few climbing up the tube.

An auger somewhere in the middle might not be as successful since two balls bunching up together could wedge the auger tight (unlikely though). The smaller auger could only rotate so fast as at some point it would be difficult to load balls without them being deflected from the entrance to the screw.

the orange ball lifter will push balls up 50" easy and feed them faster than you can use them for four machines even if they all had a fever going at once.

All they are using is a cog pushing balls up a tube, real simple

Is this the one that was once commonly available, at slotusa I think, but that is rare to find now?

How about this for $24.99 from Circuit City? (We don't have it at our "The Source by Circuit City in Canada")

Note the marble lift (archemides screw) at the far left.

    Is this the one Arby?

An email I receivedon June 20 from slotsdirect.com indicated that they were out of the ball lifter unit, but had their agent looking for more.

That's the only ball lift I'm aware of... other than the one that Arby has shown us.

As far as a motor, I'd think torque will be quite important.
A toy motor may work for a few marbles, but these metal spheres can get heavy!

Has anyone thought about using a windshield wiper motor?
You can often find them surplus, over-runs. Many are two speed, too.
They may have enough torque to do the job.

    Here's one:
