Because I'd have to pack at least 4 batteries to get this same kind of time, a laptop is too large to fit on the little table in the back of the chair in most planes whenever the person in front of you decides to lean back.
    Meanwhile, somewhere in Oklahoma.

For $400 a laptop sorta makes sense except I have a couple of laptops now & Tulsa is right about the battery life.
A DVD player is far more portable too. It can sit on your stomach as you watch... Its smaller, lighter, easier to setup & put away in seconds yada yada yada.
Also, unless you have a decent video card & memory, a laptop just dosent play a DVD as well, IMO. And once you add those things then you start getting beyond the $400 range.
I dont have to spend $400, I am just willing to do so in order to get some of the goodies that go with a higher end unit.
But...Ive found that I like the 7 inch Phillips Pet724:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1134703776691
Its got a lot of goodies, TFT LCD, lots of playback formats, long battery life etc & where it has a smaller screen than I would like, its only $150.
Im going to go to Best Buy & check on one today...

Just got a new portable DVD two weeks ago. Got a magnovox 8.8 inch screen from Walmart (online only) for about $165.00 including shipping. This thing is great.

Just checked your DVD player out on line. Those falling Walmart prices are still falling. Its only $149 now...
It looks like a great unit but it only has 4 registered playback formats. Im thinking it wont play my Ultraman or CopRock DVDs.

in this case the top of the line models aren't what you want you want to go with anything from apex it'll play a slice of bread if you want to put it in and also supports mpg files so you can download your favorites from the net and play them with no conversion . as for power most have cigarette adapters and decent battery life but best of all there price is usually cheaper than the so called better brands that like Microsoft wont let you play alot of other material . also most apex models can with a little coaxing from Internet sources play out of zone DVDs an excellent ability when you go abroad ....

    Just checked out Apex online.
CNET dosent give it much of a rating & Amazon buyers werent all that thrilled either.
Everyone agrees its definately inexpensive. But as far as quality, service & reliability, at best it gets a 5 outa 10. It seems you were one of the lucky ones.
Unfortunately, in todays "throw-away" society of cheap consumer goods it often comes down to being 'lucky'!
    Thanks for the info tho...

I think the Phillips from best buy for 149.00 is ideal for traveling.

The fact that it plays Divx too is really a plus, I have a Phillips divx DVD player at home and it plays just about anythng you put in it.

Man, Im at home. I figured out my time on the road to time home & came up with 34 days on the road & 3 days home.
I was within 200 miles of my house with a load that wasnt due till Tuesday & I started crying way so loud.
They were going to have me drop this load & pick up another & keep rolling but I just couldnt do it. Im so exhausted I couldnt stay awake & kept pulling over for naps every couple of hours.
So I just refused to do any more & told them I was going home "period!" I got home yesterday & will leave again on Monday afternoon. I plan on sleeping most of the weekend.
How about you? Where ya at?

i have 5 units including a portable unit haven't had a failure yet ...... on the other hand i converted one to take a hard drive 80 gig long before tivo it stores mpg movies and plays them like pay per view no DVD required . trust me quality is over rated with cnet and amazon ... buy one at walmart and try it if you dint like it take it back it ain't like walmarts not gonna take it . none of the so called quality DVD makers is gonna support your ultra man svcd or vcd disks ....ive been dealing with internet video for a long time and the major companies dont want you having that ability especially in the u.s.

    I got this one:

    http://shop.pcmag.com/shop/product_s.../29223601.aspx

Best buy didnt have one of the 7" or 10 " so I went to Circuit City & got the 10".
It cost a little more than I wanted to pay but not too much.
Its got a lot of playback formats & some other goodies & its screen is really clear.
I put my Ultraman DVD in it ( the one I couldnt get my other DVD player or one of my other laptops to play ) & its kicking boo-tee!
    Ultraman, awayyyyyyyyyy...

By the way, I took back the DVD player I got from Walmart in March. When I bought it they gave 90 days to return. They told me today that Walmart is now only giving 15 days to return electronics. The manufacturers arent backing Walmarts return policy so they are changing. Thats gonna be a problem if you ask me. C'mon, ask me why doncha!?

I went by Pennys today to see this free DVD.

As you might have guessed, it's not there. Only the rebate coupon. No information on this unit at all.

    Think I'll pass on it.

UPS just delivered my Phillips DVD player today.

The battery was charged up already and I'm watching a DIVX movie on it now.

picture quality and sounds are great. the 7 inch screen is much nicer than my 5 inch.

It comes with home charger, car charger and A/V cable, but no earphones.

the remote is almost usless, a lot of buttons with nothing written by them. I guess if I read the instructions and used it a lot I would be able to use it better.

    I'm A happy camper anyways
