I thought it was because the sailors carried a bag and the bag was called a ditty bag.
Because they were a rough bunch any salty jokes or stories were called ditty's

No lost socks here.
I always buy the same socks.
White sports socks, sad but effective.
Haven't had a lost sock since 1982
One less thing to stress about.
In the 80's in the U.K. white socks were the in thing.
All i have to do now is pull up my trouser legs and look down, it's like time travel
