Adobe Illustrator is what I used to do all my custom work. I bought a roll of bakclit film but my printer will only print up to 13 x 19 so you have to use at lesat 2 pieces tzaped togehter on the reels, unless you hav ea huge feeder printer like Kinkos does.

It is kinda hard to do the reel glass. especially lining up all the lights and leds.

    loon5.jpg

I just got a good clear pic of the original and put layers over top of it in photoshop, when I had it all lined up I deleted the original layer.

This is my personal opinion, or of the voices in my head, and are not meant to reflect the opinion of this board.

I create all the symbols in Adobe Illustrator and then I use QuarkXPRESS to lay them all out. I can send you a Adobe Illustrator file with just the symbols but they will not be laid out if you want. Let me know your e-mail.

I use an Epson 2200 with Pigment Type Inks. They are suppose to last a lot longer than Dye Based Inks. If you use a Dye Base ink, it may start fading after a few years (I personally have not witnessed this but did research before I made a custom). The higher end Epson printers allow you to buy paper on a roll and print as long as you need. I use to have a canon but you could not print more than 18 inches long and you need about 27 inches for the reels. The Epson 2200 is now placed with a newer model.

I would love to do a custom, and based on the contents of this thread, I've already got all the tools I need. But being new to the pachislo scene, I don't know which machine(s) lend themselves to this kind of mod.
Any suggestions as to which ones would be a good starting point, and by the same token which to avoid? The theme I have in mind would be based on Tim Burton's "Nightmare Before Christmas" and would follow that color scheme of blacks, deep purples, and blues. My wife is a huge fan of NBC and would love to build one for her for our next anniversary...

I did a bit of graphics back in early 90's lining vector over a scan was a trick I got good at. I used Intergraph product Microstation but itwas not good for full color I could lay down a line at the correct length then snap 2 points on a scan that were supposed to be at the set length, this would re-size scan to real world size, I would then overlay Vector graphics I wanted or edit the pixels if needed.
Wow that was a long time ago.

Arby used to do some great custom pachislos before his entry into pachinko absorbed him into the "darkside".

He pointed me toward Net machines, and I ordered a bunch of them. (couldn't pass up the price at the time).

They are built like a tank... VERY solid, and reinforced. And the glass is some of the easiest to remove and replace with custom film. A couple of sheets of thin plexi, and you've got it made. Nice square cuts... piece of cake.

They are sharp lookers, too. Plus, they are 7-line play... not just 5-line.
And the reels are generic enough to pass on the tedious job of making reel graphic strips, if you want.

Arby was also kind enough to send me some actual size Photoshop templates for them, which will save me a LOT of time.

I hope to get a few kicked out, if they don't all sell in my Blowout Sale thread... now that I have the time to do them right.

Here's some pics of the machine style I'm talking about:
