you better belive it mine is on about 14hours a day but within about 20 mins the bottom is quite warm, warm enough to heat the desk up under it
its because a) the heat sink is usualy at the bottom of the machine b) the battory gets a little warm when charging and if your running from mains then it is charging and c) the processor fan is alot smaler and less powerful than that of a desk top
My rice krispies told me to do it

    Rich,

this is a common occurance, the bottoms get quite hot, so hot infact that there have been studies into how it may affect male reproductive organs . since a lot of people place them on their laps and well the heat can cause problems.

I have seen several stands here that provide extra cooling for the laptop.
heres a link so you have an idea (sorry its in Greek) but you get the idea.

ok I hope the study shows that it affects those organs in a positive way....I just switched from a laptop to a regular pc a few weeks ago, and I will tell you it was in my lap 4 hours a day, nice and warm, sometimes too hot. I mean they are called "laptops" not "desktops". I hope the family jewels are o.k...

    thanks for the link Sid

that article was quite informitive, although I had a hard time keeping a straight face while reading it....

Sheynkin says it was unclear just how much additional heat could cause scrotal hyperthermia
and over time can result in decreased sperm production
that can actually be a good thing...

Thats my thinking also. I got the wife a laptop for Christmas and I kid you not, it had a warning label on it. Not exact quote but all the words were used. "Due to heat it is recommended that you place unit on a hard surface and avoid resting unit on body."

Duhhhhh, then its a hard surface top, NOT a laptop....

I have 2 laptops, both DELLs. The Inspiron 8100 gets hot so I just put something about the thickness of a spiral notebook along the back to lift it up off the table.
I have an XPS that gets so hot ( big CPU ) that I purchased a dual fan pad to put under it.
The power units can get smokin' too.
The biggest laptop killer, besides throwing on the floor in a drunken stupor, is putting your laptop back into the carrying case while its still hot cuz it just stays hot in the bag.

of course what you are looking at while it's there on your lap will affect whether the heat is tranferred to or from the machine.........

yeah they both have there pros and cons. I don't travel right this second with business so I don't need the mobility. The biggest pro with "desktops" is for say a grand you get way more than you would with a laptop, plus like drcrippen said soo easy to upgrade. I got my pc on tigerdirect.com (no I don't work for them) for cheap cheap cheap and it kicks butt P4 3gig, 1gig ram, nvidia 256meg graphics, 200 gig hard drive, less than 1k....
