I don’t see that cotton balls would put any more of a load on the amps, than mismatched impedance caused by a resistor bridge or worse one on series with the load.

nobody said it would put anymore load on the amp but on the speaker coil !!!!! as for the resistor being added if you looked at the volume switch on your pachi you'd see on the board thats the way the machine regulates the volume AS DESIGNED ......

Pink cotton balls are no worse than any other unless your staring on broke back mountain you might prefer them.......But the frilly aprons are defiantly out......

The 411 on speakers, cottonballs and the damage one causes on the other.
Speakers work by electomagnetic force. Alternating current is passed through a coil at the base of a speaker cone which rides freely over a magnet. The current sets up a magnetic field and causes the speaker to move, pushing the air in front of it. this air movement is at the same frequency as the alternating current and the resulting vibrations in the air is what we hear as sound. The harder, or stronger the current, the louder the sound. Speakers can move a lot of air when driven hard. Cotton balls dampen the air movement produced by the speaker and in so doing dampen the sound. They do not dampen the amount of current going to the speaker coil and here in rests the problem. Pachislos are loud, very loud coming from a 3 inch speaker. Cotton balls hold back the air pressure against the speaker cone, you know this because the sound is not as loud as it was without them. This air pressure restricts the movement of the speaker and voice coil. The same amount of energy is driving the coil but now that energy is not being converted into movement and is now being converted into heat in the coil. Heat over time will break down the glue that holds the voice coil in place, just like it does to your car speakers when it's left parked in the sun. Depending how bad the air restriction is varies how fast it takes out the speaker. The fact is, it will damage the speaker over time. CASE CLOSED

Where were all of ya’ll when I was trying to teach electronics to a bunch of 18 year olds? That was the high point of my job, getting everyone in the room fighting over which amp, speaker, or box would snag the most girls. While trolling the campus.

    Good Morning everyone!
I haven't used the cotton ball idea, but I did find a neet trick that works well. If you don't want to do a volume control, or just don't have the time (maybe you're about to have a big party and need a quick fix.) Do the following:
On my Pachislos (Gamera High Vision and Space Battleship Yamato) I removed the speaker, and used Blue Painters masking tape on the inside of the panel.. NOT ON THE SPEAKER. This technique brought the sound down to almost half and doesn't cause any muffling. With the Gamera machine, I added a bunch of holes in the tape do to the fact that the speakers are so powerful and I wanted them to be able to breath.

My Yamato machine actually looks better because it has a blue tint through the speaker covers.

Since there is no soldering or power tool handling, This can be done while drinking a beer...Very Important.

    Youngjedi

P.S. I do plan on adding volume controls soon.
