Glad to here you are up and about. Take it easy on the foot. Better to take it slow rather than getting it sore and it healing slower. When I broke my ribs and they were almost healed I did something that made it two weeks longer to heal. You want to hear the best thing about that fall? I have been having trouble with my shoulder. To find out what if anything was wrong they did some tests. An MRI showed something in my chest but they did not know what. They did not want to tell me anything. They then had a CT scan done. When I go in for the results the doctor starts off with this. Well we thought you my have a tumor in your lung but the CT scan showed it to be scar tissue from the collapsed lung we didn't find and we missed the four other broken ribs you had. I had so many Xrays done the night I went into the emergency room I don't know how they could miss any broken ribs much less four!

We are glad to have you back stewjr62. And sounds like you are in good spirits.

Tulsa..............Did the optometrist mention anything about a corneal abrasion? The eyes are lubricated and taped durning surgery. What I have seen happen is the anesthetist not insuring correct placement of the tape. Which in turn will cause something like what happened to you. Coughing from the tube after a neck surgery is always very poor form. The surgeon will usually become very irate when that happens. Your vitals signs through the case are usually very well documented. And you of course have the right to request a copy of all the paper work from the surgery. Either from the elevated blood pressure or from lack of controlling your wake-up, they hold a certain amount of responsiblity.

My first thought on Tulsa's dilemma was that it was a F.U. by the doctor.

I had no idea my eyes were taped? This is the first time I've heard that. Nor was I aware I could request information from the surgery. Actually no one really told me a whole hell of a lot. The only thing they said was I did what they referred to as a vaslava (sp?) manuever. What I read about it seemed to aimed at pregnant women. The optometrist didn't mention anything about an abrasion. He just said the blood vessel broke which was as the bottom of my eye and that was why I was seeing it from the top down, since it's reversed.

Hell, all I wanted was my pants back.

That was pretty close.........Valsalva' maneuver. Which is done to increase the intrathoracic pressure. This is usually done after a hole in the dura, (caused durning surgery), has been repaired. The increase in intrathoracic pressure will also increase the intradural pressure. Sorta like increasing the water pressure on a line to insure that the holes are fixed.

I saw that my Dad's eyes were taped when he was wheeled back from open heart surgery...I never realized they did that either until I asked about it.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're suggesting a possibility of a hole being caused in the dura during the surgery that isn't necessarily done during a cervical laminectomy? And that the repair and checkout on this hole could've caused this blood vessel to break?

I was told that I did the valsalva manuever during the time they were removing the tube from my throat. This is when they say the eye bleed. I'm not certain how they would know when my eye began to bleed if my eyes were taped and it took that retnal specialist some fancy tools to see where it occured.

Hmmmm.....I am not sure why they would perform a valsalva during extubation. But I don't do anesthesia. You want the patient to wake-up as calm as possible, especially on this type of case. I am not sure how they did your operation, but usually it entails using a type of bone graft. This is followed by placing a metal plate over it. Allowing the patient to cough or buck on the tube while waking-up increases the likelihood of dislodging the graft. So performing the valsalva then would be unadvisable.

As far as the valsalva causing the bleed, I just don't know. In 23 years I have never seen it happen. Doesn't mean it couldn't happen (The pressure it would take to have that outcome). Just have never seen it happen. And the only time a valsalve is done with any force, is when we ask for it. And that is when we want to check a repair or look for a possible hole. Like I said anesthesia isn't my thing. But it really doesn't sound like they told you the whole truth.

How far back to they generally keep the surgical records if I go looking for more information on it?

Try totally encasing your foot in Nerf, that way when you bump it, it won't hurt.

Lddrizzt, Thanks, and that sounds like good advice to me. Now, if I could only find that old Nerf football I had as a child.
