Default No key, but no lock either

The bad news is we got a machine today that had no key, even though the auction description stated that the door key was included. The good news, I think, is that there's no lock either, so it's pretty easy to reach around and unlock the front glass. The question is whether it's a big enough deal to push the vendor to provide a key/lock combination, or let it go.

depends how you are going to mount it, and the auction said a key.
If you are going to wall mount, you will need a lock and key.
A key means a lock and trip dog on the end to open both the window and the machine from the frame.

That's pretty much what I figured, Arby. Personally, I don't plan on wall mounting it. I will probably get a frame with legs to table mount it, in which case I'll be able to reach around. But it's not really the way it should have to be. And if we were to sell it to someone who wanted to wall mount it, then obviously that would be a problem. I think we need to contact the vendor, let them know the unit arrived without a key or lock, and request that they send out a lock/key combo, and see what happens. Thanks for clarifying the specifics, though. I wanted to really know what I was talking about before I called, in case they say: "It's no big deal". At least I can say: "Yes, that's true, unless it's wall mounted. Then that makes a difference."

Note: I just spoke with the vendor and he said he'd do his best to try to find a key/lock combo.

Well, I'm pleased to report that the key/lock combo arrived without any further need to contact the seller. He clearly honored his word and provided exactly what he described -- a hand cut key for the lock for the machine. I don't know if it shows up clearly in the photo below, but it's definitely a retro-fitted/hand cut key. (In retrospect, it seems like it would have been easier to follow Arby's approach of removing all the pins, rather than custom cutting a key for the lock, but I guess it's just another way of solving the problem. At least it works, and that's the main thing.)

After looking at that key, I wonder if the lock hasn't had its pins removed ala the Arby mod? Can the lock be turned with just a screwdriver? One of my machines came in with a key that looks like that one and it can be opened with a small screwdriver.

Nope, Don. Believe it or not, that key was actually hand cut specifically for that lock. At least that's what I was told. And the guy who told it to me seemed to be rather proud of that accomplishment. All I can say is that the key definitely fits the lock and turns it. And while the key goes in both ways, it only turns it when it's inserted one way.

You can't tell from the original photo, but the cover over the pins is still intact; it hasn't been removed. That's why I said what I did earlier -- that it probably would have been easier to remove the pins and use a universal key or even a screwdriver. But that's not how they chose to do it, and at least what they did choose to do works. I kinda found it to be beautiful, but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Below is a photo of the teeth of the key:

And this one shows the pin cover as well as the key, inserted, turning the trip dog:

Well, I dunno... below is a pic of my key. They look remarkably alike. And, although my key does not work upside either, a small screw driver does turn the lock.

Is the cover ground away at "X" because that is the up side when installed.

See this thread on what I think they did.

you will see how the lock has to install with the trangles up and the back side too

    They look like twins!
(Though I haven't been able to find a screwdriver that works to turn the lock. When you say small, are you talking about jeweler's size small? N/M -- I saw Arby's post about using a 9/16" allen wrench.)

Now, as far as Arby's post goes....yes, the upside plate cover IS missing, and so, apparently, are all the pins, springs, etc. So I was in fact able to turn it with the allen wrench. The only difference is that in your tutorial, you just remove the plate covering the pins; you don't grind it away. You bend back the 6 prongs, lift up the plate cover with a knife, and remove it with a pliers.
