Default silver metallic tape running down the side

This was mentioned in a thread that is now closed, but I was just wondering how common it is to have silver or gold metallic tape running down the side of the machine? I have only had this on one machine, It was a King Camel That I purchased from Stealth on special. I didn't mind Because it still looked ok. So who else out there has this on there games?

There is one particular Yamasa chassis that almost always has this tape. It is the chassis that is used for the 4-reel machines like Mephisto, Faust, Fung-Fu Retsuden, Sea Master etc. I've had a bunch of these with tape on them, I've never peeled it off, ad I've never felt it detracted from the appearance of the machine. I always feared that there was something underneath the tape that was possibly less attractive than the tape.

Well, lo & behold. I just checked one of our Mephistos, certain there was no tape on the side. Surprise. There is. But there are also some differences. The tape on the Mephisto is very flush, with nothing sticking up anywhere. It looks like the cut was pre-fab/custom contoured for the machine. Also, it only goes halfway down the door, from the top down to to just below where the key is. All the lines are smooth and perfectly even. It blends in to such an extent that I would see no reason to remove it or categorize this setup as a "scratch & dent". It looks very professional, like it was made specifically for that space. It's a rough analogy, but it sort of looks like the area on a lot of machines underneath the decal, Max Bet button, & token slot section - a sort of shiny silverized tape or plastic, but very tight and flush. Maybe that's just something that has to do specifically with Yamasas, I don't know. All I know is that the other machines were not Yamasas; one was a Sammy, and the other one was an Eleco.

My Mephisto has it too. It is so well done that I never noticed it before. IMHO it is a factory job for sure. Leave it there. See, we learn something new about these machines every day.

I checked all of my machines and didn't find any tape. Just lucky, I guess.

has anyone even thought this might just be applied to prevent machines from wear and scratches similar to wear guard or anti scratch film on bus windows . the edge of the machine is very prone to scratches from parlor personel opening the machines and scratched from key rings and such this would stop such damage from happening .

It's possible. And as musky pointed out, and as I said earlier, on the Mephisto it absolutely looks factory installed. The problem with the 2 machines I received that had the tape on them is that they did not look like the Mephisto looks. If would probably be more accurate to say they looked like someone tried to make them look like the Mephisto, but didn't really come close. It's impossible to say who put the tape on those machines; but it's clear that it was some sort of ad hoc deal, very unlike the tape on the Mephisto and apparently some other Yamasas as well. What's interesting is that the seller referenced Yamasas specifically when I called to complain about the tape on the Sammy & Eleco machines. But obviously neither one of them is a Yamasa, so I'm not really sure what one has to do with the other. To date, no one has said that any other company routinely sends machines with tape down the side besides Yamasa.

Well, the stuff on my Mephisto (the only one of my Yamasa machines that has it) looks like the stick on sheet metal body patch material you get at auto repair stores only polished. I think it is on there to cover screw holes or something on that model (case type) of Yamasa. I.E. a factory installation. As for it being on other machines, it may well be an attempt to hide blemishes. I for one am not that critical about scratches as I know these things are used and expect some wear on them to an extent. Anyway, that's my take on it.

My take as far as the scratches go is similar to yours; that's why I removed the tape to begin with, because I figured I'd rather have the "normal wear and tear" look than some cheap attempt to try to cover it up. And in fact, after having removed the tape, there wasn't anything all that out of the ordinary underneath; whereas the tape itself was so obvious it looked ridiculous.

Yes, and it either has no tape or if it does, I can't see it.

I didn't know mine had it either until I went looking for it. It is not tape for say but more like flush mounted metal. It runs down both sides of the door from top to about mid way. If you open the door and look at the side you should see the bottom edge of the "tape" just about where the key lock is. Like I said it is more like sheet metal then tape.

Now on the Mephisto there is a spot where the belly glass top is, and wrapping around to the back of the door is a line...on both sides. But it looks like it is just made that way.

That's it Tony! You've found it. If you look closely you will notice there is just the slightest offset along the front edge of the door and top corners. This is the "tape" that is being discussed.

Musky, I appreciate the dancing banana, but dang if that even looks like tape!

I let my nephew borrow my camera, or I'd post a pic of it. Gotta call him today and get it back.

The left hand side of my Beast Sapp machine has the tape I get irritated with it ocassionally because it is starting to come away a little bit, I am constantly pushing the tape back on, the worst is cleaning day and I accidently rub down with my cleaning cloth..woops, other than that it looks like it was made that way from the factory.

If it irritated me that much I would just take it off as some have done

most people that have removed it said there wasn't anything wrong with what was underneath so why not remove it ......of course your machine maybe different ......its worth a look....

I believe the tape might be installed by the parlors on sections that have shwn extra wear on the chrome (ie along the edge near the keylock, top of the belly glass where somone's hand will rest while playing, etc)

This is my personal opinion, or of the voices in my head, and are not meant to reflect the opinion of this board.
