I always take the coin chute apart and take out the magnet as differnet tokens can cause problems. No magnet, no problems.

I have yet to find a machine that needs a full reset after winning the bonus..even if the key does not work. Some machines are not wired for the soft reset via the key but if you find the reset button on the inside (sometimes on the door and sometimes on the Power supply, sometimes both) hitting it will reset the machine. If a machine would require a full reset then this could screw up the odds in favor of the player and not the house. In my experiences a machine is more likely to payout a bonus shortly after a full reset.
